I'm having a sort problem when viewing artists alphabetically.

The vast majority of artists are sorted by the first name if they are tagged that way. However, the odd artist here and there shows up by last name.

Janis Ian is not in the Js but is in the I section next to Ian Hunter. Joni Mitchell is not in the Js, but in the Ms.

Norah Jones is not in the Ns, but in the Js. Otis Redding is not in the Os but the Rs.

I don't spot any particular pattern that would explain that. The tagging info seems OK. I searched the forum and the wiki for similar problems but didn't note anything helpful.

I'm using Squeezecenter 7 on a Linux box (FC8) and everything else is running smoothly.

Any thoughts?

The pattern is surname, e.g Otis Redding is in the R's for Redding. Use some tagging software like mp3tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en) and I suspect you'll find these files have "ARTISTSORT" tags as well as ARTIST.

ARTIST=Otis Redding
ARTISTSORT=Redding, Otis

Note that ARTISTSORT will only be used for sorting not display.

Thanks for the info. I've been using Easytag which doesn't have the ARTISTSORT tag. I'm assuming some of my material picked it up from an online database. Unfortunately mp3tag looks to be only a Windows program, but now that I know what I'm looking for it shouldn't be too big a deal to fix. Appreciate the help.

If you are on Linux, try using metaflac:

metaflac --list [filename]

which will show you all the tags. Other parameters will allow you to change tags.

metaflac is a good solution, but if you're strongly gui-inclined then another alternative if you're using linux is to run mp3tag via wine. I have it running on wine under Ubuntu and it works great.

My issue was that a number of artists and ALL of their albums were listed near the bottom alphabetically in the artist list of my LMS. I couldn't figure out why but finally did and wanted to post the solution.

I used Mp3tag software to compare the extended tags of those artists with ones properly sorted. It turned out that the artists not properly sorted were all part of at least one compilation disc in my library that had "Various Artists" listed for the ARTISTSORT tag. For example- Even though I have four Coldplay albums, because they are part of one compilation (soundtrack) album that had the ARTISTSORT tag listed as “Various Artists” it placed everything Coldplay in the letter V section. This explains why they were all listed under the letter “V” (Various Artists).

After removing the ARTISTSORT tag from the entire compilation album's tracks and rescanning my library within LMS the problem was resolved!

By the way, I left the ALBUMARTIST tag with “Various Artists” and COMPILATION tag = 1 so that I didn’t have a mess of artists with only one track listed in my artist list. This keeps things clean and I can play the compilation when browsing the Albums area in LMS instead.

I highly recommend the Mp3tag software. It’s free, easy to use, and will help organize your library quickly.

I hope this information helps others down the road.
