View Full Version : When Duet controller can support Chinese Characters ??

Sigh !! My SB3 can display Chinese perfectly but on the new Duet controller all my chinese songs' characters displayed like garbage. It's so pity that the new Duet can't support Chinese. Is there anyone know why Duet did not follow SB3 ? when will the controller support Chinese ?

The fonts we're using don't support CJK character sets.

> when will the controller support Chinese ?

This I don't know.

Are CJK char sets what used to be known as "double byte character sets"? And there's now just support for unicode? As UTF-8, 16, or both?
If that is the issue, possibly the answer is to use something like MP3Tag to convert to ID3v2.4.
kingkimo - don't do this until someone more knowledgeable than me chimes in, I've plenty of experience with char sets, DBCS and Unicode, but don't really understand what's used for the char sets used in tags, so I may be suggesting something that's a bad idea...

radish

The problem is not that the tags aren't being read correctly (as they show up properly on the web interface I believe) but that the font used on the SBC simply doesn't contain the required characters.

As radish says it's just the characters for Chinese, Japanes, Korean
(AFAIK this is what CJK stands for...) which are not implemented in that
font. But there's eg. Hebrew. Thus we clearly can do utf8.

We can interpret the information, but not display it. Thus retagging won't
help.

SB3 can support Chinese perfectly. That's why I pre-order SB Duet. Most of the new products can support old version's features. Is it difficult to include the CJK fonts in the SBC software ? There are a lot of SB fans in Taiwan. Hope you can solve the problem shortly.

One way to get CJK (or any other character set) to work on the Duet is to supply the necessary fonts yourself, replacing the shipped font.

I just tried this, and it (kinda) works.

Requirements:
* scp (Secure CoPy) installed (I happen to have Cygwin on my Windows installation, which comes with a scp)
* a font which support your desired character set - let's assume it's c:\windows\fonts\simhei.ttf

Preparation:
1. enable remote access on the Duet remote (Settings->Advanced->Remote Login->Enable SSH) - it will tell you the remote's IP, I assume 192.168.1.3 for the example
2. open a console (cygwin or otherwise)
3. cd c:\windows\fonts

Backup of original fonts:
1. scp root@192.168.1.3:/usr/share/jive/fonts/FreeSans.ttf FreeSans.ttf
2. enter password (1234)
3. scp root@192.168.1.3:/usr/share/jive/fonts/FreeSansBold.ttf FreeSansBold.ttf

Installation of CJK-enabled font (simhei in this example):
1. scp simhei.ttf root@192.168.1.3:/usr/share/jive/fonts/FreeSans.ttf
2. enter passwowrd (1234)
3. scp simhei.ttf root@192.168.1.3:/usr/share/jive/fonts/FreeSansBold.ttf
4. enter passwowrd (1234)
5. restart the remote

After this you will notice that the menu font looks different, as it's using simhei now.

I noticed that the italic portions (such as when looking at song info) doesn't work right, there's a mess of pixels. However, in the "Now Playing" screen, it's just fine - or at least looks fine to me, I don't read Chinese ;)

Is there anyone know why Duet did not follow SB3 ?
I got to looking at the way the server and a Squeezebox2/3 communicate, and it looks as though the Squeezebox can't actually display Chinese characters (or any characters) - instead it receives graphics for a bit-map of the display. (see grfe in the protocol).
The problem is, this works fine for a 320x32 monochrome display, but it doesn't really "map" to the Duet Controller.
I hope tomb's fix works for you...

The Controller is a completely different architecture. It basically has nothing in common with a SB3. It's an embedded Linux, thus you can log in to it using SSH and replace files in its filesystem etc. as suggested in the other posting.

Right - sorry, I was being ambiguous. The solution of sending character graphics to the Squeezebox 2/3 as a bitmap doesn't map to the new device.
Just trying to answer the why question. Of course "it's a completely different architecture" is a perfectly valid answer as well. I was trying to get at the implied "why didn't they just do whatever they did with the SB2/3?"

If anyone has success with Tomb's method, can you please report back? No CJK support will be a deal breaker for me.

I literally typed up the post as I tried it. As others have mentioned, all the strings are Unicode already, it's just that the built-in font doesn't have the CJK characters present, and using just any font wont work for licensing purposes.

I'd be glad to help out others getting it to work. As mentioned in my post, the only thing that seemed screwed up is where the titles are displayed in italic - mainly in the details of a song, but *not* in the Now Playing screen. I can ask a friend who reads Chinese whether it's actually legible; will post back when I have the result.

Thanks Tomb, It works. I ask one of my friends who is a linux expert to help me out. Basically, the simhei.ttf font works quite well on the SBC. However, the English characters in Simhei are not as beautiful as the original one and the font size is a little smaller than the oringinal one, too. I will try to find some other fonts to see whether it can be improved. Hope Slimdevices can provide an official patch to solve the problem shortly

while simhei.ttf works, I met troubles when used other fonts that required more spaces than simhei.
It seems the free space left on the SBC is about 10M. Font files bigger than 10M will not be able to be copied into the device. Simhei.ttf is about 9.3M. Anyone has solution ? simhei is just not good enough.

If you insert a SD card you might be able to copy the fonts on the card, puting symlinks in the place where they would belong.

I have an "Arial Unicode" on my system (arialuni.ttf), a monster 20 MB font with just about everything inside. Haven't tried it with the remote, but given that the original font is from the Helvetica family just like Arial, it might be a good match.

Of course, given the size it might be required to use an SD card...

Worth a try.

kingkimo

Yes. I think so. I try to copy the Arial Unicode MS (Arialuni.tff)to the controller but it is just too big. Then I insert a SD card into the controller but nothing happened after I switched on the power. Can't see the SD card from wincp menu either.

The SD card is device /mnt/mmc. If you can't see the card contents, then try another card or make sure that the SD card is formatted as FAT16.

It's nice to know that we can link /mnt/mmc/arialuni.ttf to /usr/share/jive/fonts/FreeSans.ttf , and FreeSansBold.ttf to enable full set of unicode CJK characters.

But every time after the controller undergoing "Factory reset" , we have to do this change again.

Is there any method something like "executing /mnt/mmc/autoexec.sh" after Factory reset?

==================================================
BTW , my network configuration is bridge mode , and connect duet box with wired ethernet.

Sometimes my controller fail to connect to duet box and sqeezeCenter ( usually after a power-off the controller for long time).

I try to press the LED button until the red light is flashing, and controller let me choose the player "Squeezebox xxxx". Then , I select to connect to ethernet for the player , and nothing happened to the duet box but keeping flashing the red light. And the controller just tell me something like "fail to connect , try again ?" over and over again.

I can only fix this bug by "Factory reset" the controller , and everything goes back to its perfect status.

I think there might be software update to solve this bug. The configuration procedure for the 1st time is much stronger than the others.

No need to run cygwin to scp from Windows - it's way overkill. Get winscp instead.

Or FileZilla

Either filezilla or winscp are easy to setup and easy to use.

I changed the original *.ttf files to *.org and made two symlinks linked to new font files in the SD card. It seems to work fine although I couldn't find any font as good as original for the alphabet part. Thanks for help.

BTW, I haven't seen any italic in the song info. Is it supposed to be displayed in italic?

Thanks to all for the tips. I didn't realize one could replace the fonts in the Duet controller and was despairing of getting CJK characters rendered correctly.

Here are some specific tips for Japanese font support:

1. This issue was recently discussed on the 2chan BBS (http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:iWsq2PKA6ooJ:hobby11.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/pav/1165508841/935-970) and the Arisaka (modified Mac font for Win) and Meiryo (MS Cleartype font) were recommended.
2. Fonts that do not work are IPA, SH-G30, and MSGothic/GothicP.
3. Info about the suggested fonts, with sample images and links, is here: http://smart-pda.net/useful7+index.id+5.htm

I tested the Arisaka family and it looks good, with decent spacing, but it is a bit thin looking. This is especially so for Latin text. Everything is readable, but it lacks the familiar weight of the FreeSans font.

Two questions:

1. Is the Arialuni.ttf mentioned previously just a catch-all font that includes support for characters in all CJK languages?
2. This method worked for displaying artist and album names in Japanese, but I prefer to browse through the Music Library>Music Folder. Many of my directory names are in Japanese, but these are not rendered properly. I wondered why, and looked in the SqueezeCenter web interface, only to find that they aren't being detected _there_, either. Is this a limitation I don't know about? I thought that the SC software should have no trouble detecting CJK filenames server-side.

Thanks.

Edit: Answered my own questions.
A1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arial_Unicode_MS
A2. This was due to locale settings. I used the workaround located here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=313575

I found a set of small font (about 6M each) to fix the display problem with SimHei.ttf

HanWangHeiHeavy & HanWangHeiLight

(Sample of fonts : http://www.wazu.jp/gallery/Fonts_ChineseTraditional.html )
(**** Chinese characters only, no Japanese and Korean characters)
(But the font is very clear, very easy to be read)

1) goto http://apt.nc.hcc.edu.tw/pub/FreeSoftware/free_fonts/wangttf/
2) Download wt014.ttf and wt011.ttf
3) upload them to /usr/share/jive/fonts in controller (using winscp)
4) rename wt014.ttf to FreeSansBold.ttf
5) rename wt011.ttf to FreeSans.ttf

Done!

Yes, try /mnt/mmc/firstboot.sh :)

Hi,

I never wrote any shell script before.

Is it like:

cd /usr/share/jive/fonts/
mv FreeSans.ttf /mnt/mmc
mv FreeSansBold.ttf /mnt/mmc
ln -s /mnt/mmc/arialuni.ttf FreeSans.ttf
ln -s /mnt/mmc/arialuni.ttf FreeSansBold.ttf

I use notepad and save it as squeezeos-post-reset.sh since I am on the 7.1 firmware.

But nothing happened on the factory reset.

Thanks for the help.

When using Simhei fonts, it appear fine during the "Now playing" but was totally distorted in the "Artist" or "Album" listing.
Totally distorted meaning fuzzy char.

But when wangTFF version was used, alot of blank spacing appear with correct chinese char display in all display modes.

Looks like there isn't any good fix yet.

I'm just popping this thread, because I too find it quite disappointing that the Duet currently doesnot have an asian character set included, or at least a very easy way to deploy specific character sets to the duet so that I can select what I want within the storage limits.

If there isn't an opensource font available, surely Logitech have rights to a commercial one hanging around, or worst case Slim could get one made. I regard it as pretty important - as with other users, my previous experience with Slim products, it never crossed my mind that the Duet wouldn't support this. Very un-Slim.

Has Slim Devices officially come out to say that support for Chinese display will never be supported on the Controller?

That is a real shame. Even though 99% of my music library is not in Chinese, I would still like to read the 1% of my library using the Controller. SD has always support for multilingual display on the SB3, this is really a step backward... I wonder if it was a deliberate decision or an oversight?
