Errrr... M$'s UltimateTV was a Windows-based PVR. The
Replay however is Linux-based. And some of the first
hacking software for is was written by developers at
the company in their spare time. The company itself
then, Replay, basically disclosed the streaming
protocol in the code.

Not saying the Roku will follow suit but the Replay,
while not open-source like the Slims, did have some
"openness" to it.

Nope. The TiVo is a Linux-based PVR. Modern ReplayTVs are
VxWorks-based.

That'd be huge news to me. The filesystem was documented by folks who
use names like "FlipFlop" and "Toots", but who have never given any
indication they worked for Replay. Sean Riddle did a lot of the very
early work, and certainly did not.

Matthew Linehan started documenting the streaming protocol. Dan Frumin
and Lee Thompson worked on the guide protocol. I contributed to both,
including the security that was added to prevent non-authorized streaming
software from working. So far as I know, none of these people ever worked
for Replay.
