Just put a shortcut from the external disk to the music folder. SC will follow it.

Maybe I am too picky about language, maybe I am reading you wrong. But I would say your wording gets things the wrong way round.

My wording would be

Put a shortcut TO the the external drive IN the music folder.

Also gwnzen did not specify an OS. The precise syntax will depend on that.

I stand corrected. I wrote that message in a foreign language with a bit of jet lag...

My OS is WInXP, could you be more detail, is the music folder refer to the single directory path in the SS config?
in this case if my music folder is the 1st external drive which is H:\ where should i put shortcut to other external drive?

thanks,

The shortcut just goes into drive H, if this is what is set as the folder in SS.

I don't use Windows, so someone else may have to advise you, but I think it is easy to create a shortcut and then to put it into any convenient folder.

On a Mac which I use, the nearest equivalent to a Windows shortcut is an alias, which is easy to create. However, SS does not use aliases, but something else called symbolic links which aren't quite so easy to make.

SC 7.0.1 now has support for aliases. Please give it a try.

That's good to know, as it does make things a lot easier for Mac users.

But just at the moment, as I have been spending a fair bit of time discussing the Execute Script plugin - which is now brilliant, doing the extra things it could not previously do - I don't feel like laying around with SqueezeCenter when I do not actually need to.

So, would somebody please advise me...

This is one way to do it.

Creat a folder on your main drive (you could use the existing My Music folder in My Documents if you liked) and then place shortcuts in it to all the plcaes you music is held. If you have music on two other drives, put in two shortcuts dirctly to those drives. You can create shortcuts by right clicking in your new folder and selecting New/Shortcut from the resulting drop down menu.
Point SlimCentre at your new folder (or My Music Folder, if you used the one that already existef))

Another way to do it is to create a shortcut directly in your first music drive to the second music drive. Point SlimCentre at the first music drive.

I'm certain this must all be written in the Wiki.

That's what I do. The Music Folder itself holds no music, only shortcuts. Doing it other ways makes it too easy to misplace shortcuts or to create circular references.

I generally 'right drag' from the storage folder into the Music Folder. When you drop the object you'll get a context menu. Just select 'Create Shortcuts Here'.

Shortcuts have been a part of the Windows OS for a long time. Also this information can be found in the wiki. But maybe it should be written into the set up program too.

I'll revive this old thread rather than start a new one. so I've put a shortcut to my new drive in the folder that the SB looks for on my old drive. the only thing is, it doesn't show up and won't rescan and find the other 15000-something songs on the new drive..... any ideas?

Please upload scanner.log after you've enabled debugging for scan.* options (Settings/Advanced/Logging). Then run a scan.

What SC version?

sorry, I'm an idiot with this. I haven't had any problems at all until I just got back from vacation. when I go to settings/adv/logging every drop menu just says error except for "server.memory" which is off. Don't know where to find the debug for scanning option. please advise. thanks for the quick help.

here's the log file that's currently on there:
