Thanks all - and to kdf for the server settings. One other (final for the
moment) question!

Am I correct in thinking that the slimserver software supports .ogg files as
does squeezbox but slimp3 player doesn't?

That's correct. This is a setting that you can change, however. Look in
server
settings, additional server settings, behavior. There is an item at the
very
bottom, "Software Updates". Set it to "Dont check for software updates" and
click CHANGE.

Slimserver v5.1 and up supports .ogg for both slimp3 and squeezebox. You need
to have oggdec installed in your path environment (c:\windows, /usr/local/bin)
or in the same directory as slim.exe or slimserver.pl. For squeezebox, the ogg
is converted to PCM on the fly, and the slimp3 its converted to 320kbps MP3
before being sent to the player.
