This is the first reference to "home directory" that I've seen.
It caused me to look at assorted definitions of "home" and
see that there is a
/root/.slimserver.pref
(note the leading dot.)

Which appears to be identical to the file in /etc called
slimserver.conf

These appear to be the paramters that can be set with the HTML interface.
where as the parameters in /usr/local/slimserver
have to be manually editied with vi/emacs with every install.

There may be more. It is hard to know even where to look for them.

Which file is really used?
Can I delete any that appear duplicative, or worse, contradictory?

Thanks
Pat

Whichever one it finds first. Turning on the --d_prefs flag will show the
file it is currently using in the logs.

Yes. Remove all but one of the files and the server should just use that
one.

Just to follow up, I think the following is how the server works (under
Linux):

If the file /etc/slimserver.conf exists, it will be used, otherwise the file
will be called .slimserver.pref and located in the home directory of the
user running the Slim Server.
