View Full Version : Shortcuts and Windows 2000 Server

I have SlimServer running nicely on my XP box, but would like to move it
to my Windows 2000 Server box. I've tried, but find that shortcuts don't
work. That is, if I try to add a directory to the playlist and that
directory is really a shortcut to another directory (or contains such
shortcuts), I get an error saying I need to specify my music folder,
which of course I have already done.

I remember seeing some discussion of this problem a month or two back,
but don't recall seeing any solution. If it matters, my music folder is
on a second hard drive on the server, not on the same drive as the
server. Is this a function of SlimServer running as a service on Win
2000 Server, and if so, is there any way to make this work?

On a related note, I've found that this shortcut approach to arranging
my music makes sense and works well on the XP box. To illustrate, my
"Music" folder contains the following directories: "All" (where all of
the actual MP3s reside, sorted in subdirectories by artist and album);
"Mellow" (where I have created shortcuts to particular artists or albums
in the "All" directory); and other similar categories such as "Party",
"Live" and "New Stuff". This all works fine.

However, I've found that even on the XP box, I can't go too far with
this. In particular, I tried nesting a shortcut to a directory called
"Party", which is filled with shortcuts to stuff in the "All" directory,
inside a "Party Harder" directory that includes the "Party" directory of
shortcuts plus shortcuts to additional stuff. (Trying to make
overlapping playlists catering to differing groups of friends I may have
over, for instance.) This doesn't seem to work. If I add the "Party
Harder" directory to the playlist, it picks up all of the shortcuts in
that directory, whether to artists or albums, but doesn't seem to dig
into the nested "Party" directory to pick up its shortcuts. Does this
make sense? Does the server only follow shortcuts so many steps deep
before giving up?

Thanks for any help.

Jeff

On XP, the soulution was to create a user to run the SlimServer service
under. This also works under NT4 (my home server is XP Pro, NT4 at work).
I would expect 2000 to be the same. With both XP and NT4 I have the drives
on multiple computers.
