I'd like to set up my Squeezeboxen so I can quickly listen to BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4 when I want to. What's the easiest way to do this?

Cheers,

Max

Since you are based in the UK you can listen to the WMA URL. So create two entries in SC7 Favorites - one for R3 and one for R4. You can do the same on SN.

If you have AlienBBC installed then in SC7 you can also make Favorites entries for the RealAudio streams (as an alternative).

How do I get the URLs?

Ah, that seems to work - thanks! Oddly though, the Tune In URL feature doesn't appear to do anything, whereas adding them via Favourites works. Do you know why you get 4 tracks on the playlist when playing Radio 3 or Radio 4? Is there any difference between them?

I first listened to the BBC on the internet just under 12 years ago. You'd think I'd have learned this stuff by now, wouldn't you! ;-)

The R5 Real Audio ones (from your links) give:-

There was an error loading the remote feed for : (Invalid XML feed - didn't find ! )

when added as favorites

They seem OK using Real Player on a PC.

I think the multiple tracks on the WMA are a crude way of load-sharing. If first one fails - then the 2nd will be played and so on.

A more reliable way of getting RealAudio stream would be to play a stream using AlienBBC and then save it to Favorites. Some of the URLs sites don't keep up to date on all URLs especially less used ones such as RealAudio R5 (most users seem to use WMA).

I don't know offhand why Tune-in didn't work and favorites did.
Confirm that none (both RealAudio and WMA) of the URLs worked through Tune-in ?

The R5 Real URL seems fine becuase it plays on the PC. I wondered whether there is a problem with accessing .ram streams through favorites on SC?

ram files type are set up in AlienBBC custom-types.conf. So when SC find a ram file type it should be passed onto AlienBBC.

It should probably be checked but strange that AlienBBC is notgetting the URL first - it's as if the ram filetype is not configured.

Using the remote:

Internet Radio -> Staff Picks -> By city -> London, UK -> BBC Radio 3
(UK ONLY) -> Go right to add to favorites

Internet Radio -> Staff Picks -> By city -> London, UK -> BBC Radio 4
(UK ONLY) -> Go right to add to favorites

Assuming you have no favourites, these will be added as Favourite #1 and
Favourite #2

Press and hold "1" for Radio 3
Press and gold "2" for Radio 4

Using the web interace:

Follow the same process, but click on the heart icon to add to favourites.

Easy, huh?

The R5 URL ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/live/surestream_int.ram ) played OK using Tune in on my SC 7 on XP.

Are you sure you haven't managed to add a hidden char at the end after ram ?

Patrick Dixon

Yes I'm sure.

It works on 'Tune In', but not as a 'Favorite' here.

I can't get R3 or R4 either. When I do it via browse location, it doesn't work, though all other stations I've tried do work.

When I go via the web and use the links posted above, I get an error message saying "no valid audio streams were found in the playlist you entered". I copied the links rather than typing them, so they are correct (and they work on my computer - I can get these stations to stream on the PC, but not on the Squeezebox).

Can you be more specific
1. Are you using the RealAudio or WMA streams ?
2. Are you based in the UK ?
3. Does Radio 1, Radio 2, 5Live or World Service work ?

I got the same result - however if I edit Favorites.opml and add a type="audio" to the Radio 5 entry - it will play.

It looks like there is a some sort of bug which needs more invtesigation. More likely the Favorites
editor needs to have a feature to be able to mark an URL as playable and not assume it is an OPML file.

Tried both, but I now understand RealAudio isn't meant to work. But WMA doesn't either.

Yes, UK based.

Can get R5 and world service, R7, R1 Extra...can't find R1 and R2 in the location/London list.

I've just noticed a thread in another forum saying that urls with the .asx ending in the link on p1 of this thread aren't playable urls:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42460

...though this link plays on my PC.

Some ASX URLS are playlist and not playable streams URLS but the majority of ASX URLs are playable streams.

RealAudio will work if using a Slimserver/SqueezeCenter and you have installed AlienBBC. RealAudio will not work on Squeezenetwork.

Are you using SqueezeNetwork ?

Yes, Squeezenetwork, not AlienBBC.

Do I need AlienBBC for R3 but not for other beeb channels?

If you are in the UK and the BBC servers think you are using a UK ISP then you should be able to play all the BBC WMA stations which includes Radio 1,2,3 & 4.

Some problems do happen.
1. You are using an ISP which looks like it comes from outside UK (e.g. person working in UK for a large non-UK multinational trying to listen over the corporate internet connection)
2. using UK ISP but BBC mistakes it for non UK
3. Didn't wait long enough for connections - can be 30-40 secs I believe.
