Arrrggggggggh, it is not working anymore. I enabled the slimp3 to show the buffer instead of the progress, and when I play poorly encoded mp3s that fill up the buffer right away, the song ends right after the buffer fills up. This is the root of the problem. Some mp3s play as long as the buffer is not full, for 20 or 30 seconds but right after the buffer fills up the song dies.

Well it might have - but it looks like the problem is in the OS itself.

Yes, you'll burn more CPU - but probably not enough to impact playback.

I'm going investigate this further later. It would help me debug the
problem if you could email the output of "showrev -p" to
jasonholtzapple (AT) yahoo (DOT) com. Knowing the patch differences between your
system and mine might offer some clues. Also, what nic are you using?
