View Full Version : SYNC Problem

Hi, I've just bought some active speakers and connected my old SB (running firmware 40) to sync with my new SB3 (running fw 72). The server is a QNAP TS-101 running SS 6.5.1. I have given both SBs unique names and static IP addresses. The problem is that whilst I can get them to sync intermittently one or other (or both) either stutter and stop completely after a couple of minutes. Wireless strength is around 60% on the SB3, less on the other. I'm guessing that the problem is related to wireless signal/buffering/etc and hopefully someone has had this problem and can tell me what I need to tweak to fix it. Thanks

What kind of files are you playing? Is your server also running wireless?

Hi eric, MP3 mainly encoded at 320. The Qnap is wirelessly connected to both SBs. Forgot to mention when playing both SBs together but un-sync'd they appear to behave.

Sync sucks in older versions of SlimServer, please try SC7.

Hi Andyg, Sorry for my ignorance but I'm assuming SC7 is just the latest version of SS with a name change? I've only recently discovered a script to get my QNAP onto 6.5.1 and I'm guessing going to SC7 on QNAP wont be easy? Does that mean I cant use SYNC on my current sw level?

Yeah, sorry I don't know of the status of SC7 for QNAP. Sync is mostly OK with older versions, but it's not perfect.

Thanks andyg; is 6.5.4 likely to be any more stable than 6.5.1? Is the hardware a factor (SB1/2 worse than SB3)?

Yes, 6.5.4 is better. And yes, SB2/3 are much better than SB1. :)

I have tried running sync on 6.5.4 loaded to my PC (rather than QNAP) but the results are the same. Havnt tried SC7 yet but will it make any difference? I am beginning to wish I hadnt bothered buying the active speakers (or more accurately done some more research upfront - I thought sync was a standard feature). Has anyone got sync running without problems on a set-up other than multiple SB3s?

Well the SB2 and SB3 internals are basically the same, so the real question is how well have people done with sync on the SB1. I did use to have one and it generally worked but did have problems. Remember that the SB1 is MUCH more sensitive to wireless problems than the SB2/3 and when synced that just becomes even worse. If you can improve the signal strength or put a cable in you'll see better performance. SC7 should also help, if you want to try it out just install it on a PC as a trial.

thanks radish, I may as well give SC7 a try. Incidentally I've found SB3 to be no better than SB1 regards wireless stability (ie my SB1 is fairly solid). Anyone out there got a SB1 sync'd with a SB2/3?

If you are only streaming mp3s you would not see much difference in wireless performance between an SB1 and an SB2/3 because you just do not need much performance with mp3. Now start streaming FLAC and other lossless or uncompressed codecs and the SB1 will start to show its limits in regards to wireless performance.

well i'm very confused now since SB3 seems to be the weak link!! Loaded SC7 and sync'd both SBs. Both started playing (SB1 wireless strength 30% & SB3 68%) for approx 30-50secs then SB3 stops playing and starts re-buffering. Manage to restart but then them almost immediately SB3 re-buffers again. Then SB3 starts to lose connection to SC7 and has to go thru n/w setup. Meanwhile SB1 stays rock solid on 30% and only stops when SB3 stops (as I assume its supposed to do if in sync?). Any hidden tweaks I can use or this the end of the line?By the way SB1 is still on f/w 40, again I assume this is correct?
