What are the differences between the 3 versions of squeezebox?
I've queried google, but came up empty.

I'm looking for functional differences, not the fact that the casing changed or that it's got a VFD display...

I want to use a squeezebox to drive an amp, but it will all be hidden in a closet, and will all be controlled through slimserver web interface.

SB1 has two models, called SB1 and SB1/G

The only difference is the display, its cooler on the G

SB2 and SB3 are identical internally, different case.

SB2/3 does more formats natively, can talk to SqueezeNetwork,
has bigger internal buffer.

Short answer: for all practical purposes the SB2/3 are the same. They are both much better than the SB1.

You can, in theory, buy a used SB2 on Ebay, but be careful of 2 things: 1) SB2's have held their value amazingly well, there is not a huge cost savings in buying used and you don't get the 2yr (!) warranty. 2) A lot of people sell SB1g's as SB2's.... be very cautious and make sure you're really getting an SB2 and not an SB1, there is a large difference between the two (more memory, more formats, Squeezenetwork support, etc).

If you're as paranoid about misrepresentation (either deliberate or "it looks just like that picture!" mistakes), just get an SB3.
