View Full Version : Missing package auto-resolution on PPC xubuntu

My flower-power G3 iMac is happily running xubuntu, and I'd like to get slimserver running on it to play around with. Is there a fast way to install and automatically install all the dependent packages in one go on PPC xubuntu?

I'm new to 'modern' Linux, though I was using it as far back as 1995 so I'm happy with CLI stuff. GUI is fine too though :-)

Many thanks,

Dr. Matt...

The .deb has always worked for me.

The .deb has always worked for me.

I have that, what I'm after is a method by which I can install from the .deb (or equivalent) and at the same time automatically identify, download and install all the dependent packages down the chain. I got fed up last night after about 45 minutes of "I need this package, and that package needs these three, and..."

Thanks,

Dr. Matt...

Yes this stuff is not meant to be done manually. If you follow the instructions at

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?DebianPackage

you'll get all your asking for for free through the apt-system. I think that "gdebi{-gtk,}" might also resolve dependencies if they are all downloadable through apt.

Thanks for your feedback. The problem is that I'm running on xubuntu for PPC, i.e. there is no 'ppc' directory at

http://debian.slimdevices.com/dists/stable/main/

Since I believe all the packages are platform agnostic, is there any way to fool my Linux setup into using one of the distribution's Packages file? Would this be safe?

Many thanks,

Ah, I overloooked the PPC-part. Where did you get the slimserver deb? I think that in most cases the perl-packages are not platform agnostic. If so you should be able to just use the i386 repository. But I am not sure about this, and I'd recommend you get a second opintion before trying.

Btw. did you try with gdebi?

I found this post:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30860

...and got the slimserver deb package from beneath http://debian.slimdevices.com/pool/main/

I have now used wget to grab all the deb packages beneath this URL into a single directory:

wget -nc -nd -P"C:\Program Files\wget\slimserver" -r -l0 -p -np -t10 -k -nv -A.deb "http://debian.slimdevices.com/pool/main/"

...but a few of them are i386 specific. Hopefully, those few should not be too difficult to sort out for PPC and I may be up and running before too long. However, it's going to be a busy couple of weeks at work so I may not be able to find the time to continue with the installation for a while. I'll keep you posted though, and many thanks for your suggestions so far.

Peace,

Dr. Matt...
