View Full Version : Just got a Squeezebox and cannot use the server

I just received my Squeezebox today and my general excitement has turned to
utter frustration at the inability of the server to operate properly on my
PC. I installed the SlimServer 5.0.1 server software, configured it to use
my e:\flac directory and started it up. For nearly 40 minutes (!), the
server consumed 100% of the CPU cycles on my 450 mhz machine. Needless to
say, I could do little with the server while the process was running. When
it finally completed, I shut down the server and restarted it and to my
surprise, it started the library scan over again. Another 40 minutes!
Clearly if the server requires this much overhead every time I start it, it
isn't going to be practical. I'm guessing that the time is being spent
cataloging the 375 CDs I have on disk, but even with that number of files
(about 1500) it seems like an excessive amount of time to work.

In any case, I rummaged through the user interface (very slowly mind you)
to see what features the system had and was able to find the link to my
music folder. The albums in the directory showed up, but every attempt to
add a CD to the playlist using either the plus or arrow buttons did nothing
and left me with an empty playlist. At this point I shut down the server
and looked for documentation to provide some clues about how to set things
up properly and how to use the system. To my utter dismay, I found
virtually nothing of use and so decided to post here.

Admittedly, this is new software for me and I certainly expect some
learning curve. However, the Squeezebox has not even been unpacked and my
inclination is to simply return it for a refund. This first set of
interactions with this software has been very frustrating and took a great
deal of time. I'm hoping that someone can steer me in the right direction
about how to get this software working acceptably in my situation.

Thanks,
Ken

System: PIII/450 mhz, 750 mb RAM, Windows 2000 Pro

try the latest updates, especially if you are using flac:
http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/

then enable the MP3 tag cache to reduce the startup time. I fyou think 40 mins
is too much, try iTunes sometime. I've waited damn near all night to get merely
9000 songs to load up in that pig. Slimserver never takes that long, and it
takes less after the first time.

I installed the latest update this morning and nothing seems to have changed. The server attempts to scan my music directory every time it starts up, and the process simply takes too long and consumes too many cycles from my computer.

Is there a way to set up the server to not scan at all? I noticed that there is a button on the Server Settings page for initiating a scan, but there seems to be no way to prevent the server from doing this automatically on start up.

Thanks,
Ken

it HAS to load the information into memory on startup or the performance along
the way would be horribly slow. Try running the command "c:\program
files\slimserver\server\slim.exe with the --d_info --logfile c:\slim.log"

the path to slim.exe might be differnt if you've installed it elsewhere. Then
post the first bit of the log. That will show whether or not the db file is
being loaded properly. I run my server on Linux, and it takes less than 30
seconds to load the slimserver.db file once its been created. The first scan
from no data takes several minutes with my 9000 song collection, but its only
needed when I want to get rid of stale data.

kdf - Thanks for the help. I ran the server several times without logging, each time waiting for the cataloging process to end, and then ran with the --d_info flag and captured the log. The output is below. It still appears to be ignoring the information it picked up from the subsequent runs and rebuilds the catalog each time.

What I had hoped to see in there was something like this:
2004-01-25 12:25:36.2350 loading types config file...
2004-01-25 12:25:36.2644 ID3 tag database support is ON, saving into: /home/fishbo
ne/.slimserver.db
2004-01-25 12:25:36.2646 Cleared infoCacheDB
2004-01-25 12:25:36.9425 starting DB cache scan

It seems you are not, in fact using the DB. Can you verify that the preference
is set in the slimserver.pref file?

I don't know if there are issues with using Storable(DB control) in windows.
There are ppl other than myself who are better able to answer that. Your other
option is to download iTunes for Windows, build the library in that, then point
your music folder in Slimserver to the iTunes library file. This will cause the
iTunes library to be loaded on startup instead of a raw scan. This will be much
faster.

kdf,

Thanks very much for the response. I'm not certain which entry in slimserver.pref pertains specifically to the database. Can you point me at the correct one?

Thanks,
Ken

Sorry,

usetagdatabase = 1

Thanks. This value was set to 0, but when I changed it to 1 I received the following error in the log:

2004-01-26 08:11:25 loading types config file...
2004-01-26 08:11:25 ID3 tag database support is ON, saving into: C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\SLIMP3INFO.DB
Can't locate object method "TIEHASH" via package "MLDBM" at /PerlApp/Slim/Music/Info.pm line 151.

After this, the server simply exist. It sounds like there are still some bugs in at least the Windows version of the server. I've updated to a more recent nightly build (as of last Saturday night), but since both it and the released version (5.0.1) had the same behavior with respect to re-caching on startup, I'll have to assume that the bug exists in both versions.

Well, at least its no longer a mystery. I'm curious if picking up an earlier version of the server might provide some relief for this.

No. Earlier versions always scanned, unless you had iTunes. I'm not sure what's
causing that failure. I can only guess the setting was being held at zero to
prevent this crash. I'm using the perl version under windows some of the time
and its working fine.

Thanks very much for your help, kdf. I picked up the very latest build (5.1) and the caching problem seems to have been repaired.
