View Full Version : Squeezebox won't play

I have a Squeezebox2 connected to my Gentoo box that runs SlimServer. It has been working fine for about a month now and then all of a sudden, stopped working the other day.

Now, I was having issues with the new version of Compiz, Compiz-fusion, which had replaced my Beryl install, and so I had created a temp user account, backed up my user data to it, then deleted my account and re-created it. I then had to chown the Music folder on my music drive so I could access my music again (it belonged to my user before as well).

I re-emerged slimserver to see if that would fix it, but to no avail.

It looks like it's going to start playing, but then doesn't, IE, the VU will do the initial "up" like it's playing, but the music never starts.

On a side note, I can use SoftSqueeze and it WILL play the library............??????

slimserver user is a member of the users group, which has read permissions to everything in my music folder.

Anybody have any insight? Is there a way to completely reset the squeezebox? Perhaps it's an issue with the device itself?

okay, this should not be a filesystem permissions issue since SoftSqueeze plays.

Is this SoftSqueeze being run on the server or on another machine?

If it does not run (or you don't know if it does) on another machine, then your problem would most likely be firewalling of some sort. Your server would not be allowing connections from other machines, but still allowing localhost connections.

I dunno gentoo, but I would start looking at firewall configuration.

I was initially running Softsqueeze on this box, which is the server. So, I tested what you suggested, and installed it on my Laptop. It plays fine.

So, if Softsqueeze works from another computer, I can't see it being firewall related.......

I now have also tried re-installing the firmware and it still doesn't play. Would a picture of what is showing on the device help?

Just an update, downloading 6.5.5 to see if that helps......... Nope. It's like the Squeezebox is having a moment or something? Yet it was working fine until a few days ago???????

EDIT: And it's doing the same thing with Internet Radio as well, starts to play and then it "hangs" but the unit is still responsive. No sound is heard, but it looks like it's trying to play......??????

Strange eh? And slimserver is started using /etc/init.d/slimserver start

I ran /opt/slimserver/slimserver.pl status and I get this:

What user are you running this command as?

2007-11-25 18:58:26.6034 ERROR: Cannot write to preferences file /root/slimserver.pref, any changes made will not be preserved for the next startup of the server

This means that the user running slimserver.pl does not have write permissions to the pref file.

mkdir /MySQL: Permission denied at /opt/slimserver/Slim/Utils/MySQLHelper.pm line 156

This means that the user running slimserver.pl does not have write permissions to the cache dir.

Command was being run as root, slimserver is running as slimserver as far as I know, it's whatever it was set to run as when it was emerged.

Just checked the permissions on the /etc/slimserver.pref and it's owned by slimserver and is in the group slimserver.

Why is it trying to write to /root/slimserver.pref?

mkdir /MySQL: Permission denied at /opt/slimserver/Slim/Utils/MySQLHelper.pm line 156

This means that the user running slimserver.pl does not have write permissions to the cache dir.

Where is the cache dir located?

I am listening to my Squeezebox right now.

I used the info from this page:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?PlayerFirmware

I reset the device to factory defaults, and reprogrammed Xilinx and it started to work? It didn't work immediately after the defaults, I had to do the Xilinx program before it would function.

VERY odd.

But at least I know it had nothing to do with my slimserver config.

Probably resetting to defaults didn't help, reprogramming Xilinx did.

I've only had to do it once or twice but I find that reprogramming Xilinx helps when there's a severe audio problem like that.
