I followed the instructions from this page: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?DebianPackage

I used the stable repository.

How do I start slimserver afterwards?
The command "slimserver" in console gave me this:

2007-11-01 11:14:32.5625 ERROR: MySQLHelper: createSystemTables() Couldn't connect to database: [Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/home/torb/Cache/slimserver-mysql.sock' (2)]

"sudo slimserver" gave me this:

2007-11-01 11:16:07.4061 ERROR: Cannot write to preferences file /home/torb/slimserver.pref, any changes made will not be preserved for the next startup of the server

/home/torb/Cache/my.cnf: Permission denied at /usr/share/perl5/Slim/Utils/MySQLHelper.pm line 178.
2007-11-01 11:16:07.6060 Use of uninitialized value in sprintf at /usr/share/perl5/Slim/Utils/MySQLHelper.pm line 467.

I was just going to try the slimserver software before making up my mind about buying a SB, but can't even get it running. Not a good sign :/

Ok, i think i missed something elementary: the slimserver.log reads:

2007-10-31 23:04:00 slimserver_safe started.
2007-10-31 23:04:06.7001 Use of uninitialized value in join or string at /usr/share/perl/5.8/File/Spec/Unix.pm line 37.

2007-10-31 23:04:17.5350 go to the following URL, and click on the "Server Settings" link.

2007-10-31 23:04:17.5351 The URL to access SlimServer is now:

http://torb-laptop:9000/
2007-11-01 00:22:13 slimserver_safe stopped.

And when i try the URL http://torb-laptop:9000/ firefox can't find it.

If I can't even set this up on an Ubuntu laptop, I'll never get it to run on a NAS or other headless box. Any help would be good :)

Allright! I did what this post said:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=237976&postcount=10

And now this is the only error in slimserver.log (after running "sudo /etc/init.d/slimserver start"):

slimserver_safe started.

Stiiill can't access this page, though. Could this be because VPN is activated? I'm at school right now.

Really sorry for posting this before i tried reading the errorlogs and whatnot. I'm pretty fresh at this.

Are you trying to access the webpage over the Internet? A number of things could be causing problems.

It's alwasy a good idea to try to access the slimserver webpage locally, i.e. from the same machine as slimserver is running on. So I recommend that you do that. It's also much easier to give advice if you start out with some minimal setup.

When and if this works the next step is to be able to access the slimserver web-page from LAN and WAN.

I was trying to access it locally, and this I managed to do now. I used the IP-address of my computer instead of "username:9000". With this one I could connect to slimserver with another computer also. Thanks :)
Now to make slimserver read my music files...
