View Full Version : Today's daft Jive idea

Here's something I've clearly not thought through too much...

If you've more than one Squeezebox/Transporter then get Jive to learn the wireless signal strength it gets when you're near each player. That way it might be able to either automatically select the player you're controlling or at least default/order the list to make it easier to select the player.

It would rely on having different signal strengths near each player, and might be confused by normal signal strength variations, but it might just work.

I told you I'd not thought it through properly!

Or double-integrate the accelerometer signals, and get Jive to learn which room it's in by position.

Use the transmissions of each of the SBs to triangulate, after the fashion of GPS satellites?

If you've more than one Squeezebox/Transporter then get Jive to learn the wireless signal strength it gets when you're near each player.
But Jive doesn't talk to the players - it talks to SlimServer. The players are not access points. Jive's signal strength relates to its position relative to the WAP, which has nothing to do with how close it is to a player.

Bet you could do it using the IR LED.. I'm not sure the firmware's
got round to supporting him yet though..

If I'm in the lounge (with the JHB), I might get a 50% signal on the
Jive remote.

If I'm in the study (where the WAP is), I might get a 80% signal on Jive
remote.

I can therefore hazard a guess that if the signal strength is 60% I want
to control the lounge player, but if it's 80% I want to control the
study player. That would work whether or not those players were wireless
and whether they were SoftSqueeze, SBs, Transporters, or Squeezeslaves.

I'd have to tell it that 40%-60% was in the lounge, and 70%-90% was in
the study, of course, but maybe that could even be learned by the player
I most often try to control when the wireless coverage is in that band.

It's not a particularly serious idea, but I suspect it's possible if
your room layout/wireless coverage is sufficient diverse.

If Jive had a built-in microphone (hint, hint) it could hear which SB was playing, and so know which room you're in.

Also if the Jive "dock stand" plugged in the expansion connector, it could send a unique USB ID to the device, and so know which player to control by default...

It's a good idea, not a daft one. I think Dr. Lovegrove is on the mark that the IR could be used for such a feature.

This is by no means a priority feature, but I filed it as an enhancement request

Ah right, I didn't grok that you were using the signal strength to the WAP as a hint for which player was likely to be closest. In that case, yes I can see that it might work. But I'd rather the Jive developers concentrate on the fundamentals first. No point icing a cake that hasn't (yet) risen.

I had a random thought of my own, I think we'd all agree that album art needs to be cached and there's been a suggestion of a background thread to build the cache. So why not have the server build and maintain the cache file then jive just needs to syncronise it rather that build all the thumbnails which must be less of a load on it.
The same could also be applied to Artist and Album lists.

I think Jive needs to be using local lists if it's ever going to have Ipod like performance.

Just a thought.
