I thought I'd use an old PC to make a slim server appliance but its only optical drive is a DVD reader. This works fine as a boot CD when installing Windows but the slimCD image I burned on a CD won't boot. It starts booting but then says something about not finding the file system and drops to a "limited" shell.

I'm a total linux noob as you can tell. I've been browsing for weeks trying to get a handle on the basic linux concepts but I fear i missed something obvious, like you can't boot a CD from a DVD drive.

Do I have to burn the ISO file to a DVD to get this to work? Thanks.

I don't think you missed anything. It should work since your DVD is really a DVD/CD drive (one could think of it as a cd drive with added dvd-functionality).

About your question. Could you please post the exact error message you are getting when trying to boot ? Also do you know if the hardware is special in any way ? E.g. do you have SCSI, some kind of special hard-drive controllers etc ?

EDIT: I see mherger just posted also, he knows SlimCD much better than I. You could try to check correctness of the iso-file you downloaded by calculating its md5sum and comparing it to the md5sum number listed on the slimcd download page. I'm not familiar with Microsoft, but a quick google search gave this page where a tool for calculating the md5sum can be downloaded.

Hmm... that's odd. Booting from the CD should work fine (I only have DVD
drives, no CD drives). I rather assume the image being broken. Download
again, burn again, try again...

Problem fixed, but I don't know why. I had burned slimCD to a RW CD. Even though I could browse the files on the CD it wouldn't boot. When I burned slimCD to a CDR it booted fine. Thanks.

I'm prototyping a slim appliance so now it's off to try Ubuntu...
