Not sure what that means. SlimServer sees the files, but when I click play nothing happens. Is there a trick?

Depends on the source of the files. If they are bought from a source which applies DRM then they will not play. The standard way to overcome this is to rip them to a CD and then import them back into your system again.

For transcoding -or- is that LAME?. My library is ripped using iTunes, so they are mostly m4a files - works fine.

The DRM'd files usually have an m4p extension.

If you are using windows - make sure you have installed Quicktime.

Yes, thousands of them. I had a similar problem with files of a friend of mine. I recognised at last that the files imported didn't have the right permissions and ownership. Had thought of drm and format issues and all that and even contacted logitech to find out if they work. How should they have known?
