View Full Version : Adjusting L/R balance?

This may sound like a strange request, but after a pretty serious ear infection and perforated ear drum a few years back, the hearing on my right ear has been slightly reduced.

This is enough to skew all sound from a couple of stereo speakers slightly to the left ... which can be annoying.

So, I have two options right now: Sell my Cayin 153B amp (which I'm pretty happy with) and get an amp with L/R balance control, or ask this forum if there is any plug-in or any way to adjust the L/R balance on the Squeezebox 3, so that I can "counter" the L/R difference.

Any hints/tips greatly appreciated.

Take a look at the Inguz EQ plugin; this allows you to change the left/right balance.

Ah ... so close. Seems it's Windows (and Linux) only, and I'm on OS X.

According to their web page an OS X release is planned "for the future". I don't know how far away that is. Finger's crossed ...

Thanks for the tip, though.

Another option is to get a variable analog attenuator.

See the Attenuator section on this page:

This one has been rated well as a simple stepped resistor pack style attenuator.

I am not an expert, but a thought springs to mind. Are you sure that your hearing loss is the same across the frequency band? If its the outer ear that has taken most damage it might only occur with those frequencies that are transmitted by the hammer and anvil.

You might find that a digital hearing aid might help as it could be tuned to your problem.

Just a thought but my Squeezebox1 allows L / R adjustment....but the option doesn't appear on my SB3 -I presume this is a firmware thing rather than a set up. Never bothered to investigate as I don't use it. Anyone know?

An update: after much help from the inguzDSP developer it seems I am finally getting the plug-in (with balance control) to work with OS X.

Lossless and MP3 are working fine, though AAC and AIFF are not. Hopefully just a few more adjustments now ...
