What kind of format are you trying to play out?

I am sure one of this but one of slim guys could comment but if its an MP3
file it may be sent out of the digitals as MP3, if your receiver cant play
MP3 then not much will happen.

You could easy test this though by playing out a WAV file.

This is absolutely incorrect. The Squeezebox emits PCM audio
on its digi-output. Nothing else (save perhaps AC3 or DTS)
makes any sense. There's no such thing as a receiver that can
handle MP3 input.

You're right about the PCM...

- but there are receivers on the market now that have an ethernet port
to allow playback of MP3's stored on the network somewhere.

Sort of like having a slim built in to the receiver.
