Would it be OK if we didn't post the latest Nokia prices du jour here? We already get a lot of spam posts for cell phones that we delete, and Nokia spam happens to also be a common sign of a dead forum because it means the moderators aren't watching. I know the 770 is a popular product among this community, but there are plenty of other web sites for deal hunting.

This is specifically relevant to this community, and last week (indeed still now) these things were selling at 200+, so this sudden price drop is noteworthy. The woot deal is US-only.

Unless you don't advise us to buy as your Jive platform is about to have a hardware release? ;)

I think the 770 is the exception to the rule, I for one thank the woot post, because I have been looking for somthing like that for a while, since my axim is not the greatest. And its directly related to slimserver.

Maybe if there was a for sale section, it might be better over there.

The price is attractive but is the 770 actually any good as a remote? What I'd like is to be able to give the device to a total novice and allow them to browse at an acceptible speed, can the 770 do that? Many other posts seem to be people who've gone back to using the standard remote, the 800 seems a different matter but it's a bit more than 85

You could probably hand the thing to a novice. That said, even with the speed improvements Ben's been able to wring out of the 770 skin using Ajax, it's still pretty sluggish and there's very poor feedback after you've pressed a button. Once you're used to it it's ok, but novices will tend to click something multiple times without realizing their click has already been registered. It certainly requires patience.

The 770 is initially impressive, and a nice way to peruse your catalog if you're unsure of what you want to listen to, but the IR remote is so much more efficient when you actually want to get to the business of cuing up and controlling your music.

Well I think Ben Klaas, the guy who wrote the 770 skin, said that he preferred the normal remote.

Ultimately I don't care what a novice would think - I have ordered one for me! I prefer the web interface overall, as it allows me to browse, but I'd like to do it from my armchair not from my computer table. The remote is only good if I want to play something specific, not for browsing.

I agree that is also my view.
