View Full Version : Announcement: a new PSP skin

I am pleased to release a PSP skin that I have been using for some time. I've attached the skin as a zip file below and have uploaded some screenshots. Here are some design principles and features:

- optimized for the 480 by 272 screen of the PSP, scrolling only where necessary
- leveraged several UI elements from the wonderful Touch and Nolia skins, with a couple functional enhancements including a a search screen uses a virtual keyboard and the "time remaining" javascript on the player screen is (I think) a little cleaner
- optimized for speed by providing the ability to download this skin's images to the PSP memory stick to load quickly (strongly recommended)
- images are used sparingly, mostly on the home screen and player screen, and they are large so you don't need to be precise with the PSP's mouse
- I had to work around browser deficiencies - image caching, javascript, and memory management on the on the PSP browser are very unsophisticated, such as (1) can't use div tags for art browsing, (2) can't use javascript to update image elaspes time, so replaced it with text-based counter in a read-only input field, and (3) local images cannot be loaded using the standard file:/// tag, so the local image download only works on the PSP, not on more robust browsers like Firefox
- don't sacrifice user appeal- although images are used sparingly, there are other UI elements that are used to compenstate for this. For example, the cover art is intended to stand out against the bland black, gray, and white scheme. Also font styles, sizes, and weights are varied to draw the user to the most important elements and be able to distinguish between clickable and non-clickable (italicized) elements. Finally alternating background colors on the rows allow the user to distinguish between rows on text-heavy lists
- easy UI - has to pass the wife test, she is not a gadget-friendy person. It had to be simple and functional.
- allow skin to be useful beyond the PSP - I hope you find this simple yet appelaing skin useful on your PC/laptop. I created a cookie mechanism to allow the user to specify whether to use local images or reload them each time (on more more robust browsers like Firefox the caching is sophisticated enough so this isn't an issue anyway)

Fire away with the feedback please, and enjoy ...

I would suggest that you add this to the skin section of the 3rd party plugins section on the wiki, this way it will be easier for people to find it.

Marvellous - I'll give it a try as soon as I'm home. Adding to erland's suggestion, do please announce this on the third party plugins forum, which has a little less noise than this general forum :)

I downloaded this, how do I install it on my PSP?

Sorry for such a n00b question.

You don't install it on the PSP, you install it in Slimserver in the skins folder and then call it up using the URL http://serverip_or_name:9000/PSP

Ok, I get that.

Which browser do you guys use on the PSP?
Suggestions...

Got the Skin copied in my server but my PSP doesn't want to connect, getting DNS error 80410414.

I can connect to other web pages fine - ie: yahoo.com, but just can't connect to my server.

Any ideas... I have proxy server off, and the PSP shows that I'm connected to my network fine.

got it working now, but had to enter the ip address - it would work using the name of the server. weird

This is exactly what i am looking for. But... not in this resolution.
Since the Touchskin has disapeared your skin would be very useful to deal with real touchscreens. (resolution 1024x768 and higher).
is it possible to change the res in a kind of "central" way?

btw. i am familiar with the nokia 770 skin. But the Buttons are to small, there is no virtual keyboard and so on.

It didn't. What's wrong with it? It should still be there.

O.K. michael,
There was a fabulous touch Skin created by Stefan Christiansson in February 2004. This skin was working until version 6.3 (bevor MySql).
From there Bernd Klaas took over. Now Touch skin and nokia 770 skin are almost identically.
Just have a look into skinconfig.yml : skinparents: - Nokia770 (touch is working for IE, nokia 770 for firefox and opera)
Don't get me wrong. The Nokia Skin is fabulous as well if - you have a pen to push the buttons and get a virtual keyboard.
Unfortunately real touchscreens are supposed to be touched with fingers.

The Nokia skin was mostly based on Touch originally, but then grew to
support many more features.
The geometry of icons should not have changed, and Nokia770 skin only
restricts the overall sizing to the screen of the Nokia770/800 devices.
The Touch skin fell out of date with many current slimserver
requirements, so the best way to have it updated was to leverage the
amazing work Ben had done already on the Nokia770. Everything from the
old Touch skin should still be there in current slimserver builds. The
virtual keyboard went away for a while, but it is back now. Is there
more that is missing?

In pageheader.html change width="450" on line 104 to whatever you want. I did a quick test and it looks good at higher widths (except the browse artwork page is left justified vs centered - everything else looks good). Let me know what you think.

you don't actually need to copy the gifs into the /psp/photo one by one. i found i could copy them in from the html/images directory straight into the memory stick.

now all we need is a way of keeping the album covers on the psp....

Do you mean the folder containing your PSP skin? Try "C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\HTML\PSP", or whereever you installed SlimServer followed by \server\HTML\PSP.

thanks for updating the wiki Tim, i didn't think it was obvious if you didn't know where to put it.

i think the skin is great on my psp and runs pretty fast once you have downloaded the icons. do you think there is any way one could store the album art on the psp so it doesn't have to fetch it each time? it looks really cool if you scroll through the covers but takes ages to load up which sort of ruins the effect a bit.

Would there be any chance of a how to article on the PSP set up to use this interface/ plugin and any associated technical hurdling? I would like to get this working and a step through would be superb.

Hi All,

I can now access the SlimServer on my PSP. Still not sure what the issue was but may have been related to the fact that there are 2 wireless jumps between the PSP and the laptop running SlimServer so 4 jumps for an action to rendered response loop... The skin looks excellent . I will hopefully find a way to speed up the control cycle.
Thanks a lot for the good work Tim.

How is the cookie that tells the browser that the icon image path is on the PSPs local memory stick set ?

In home.html there is a Javascript section of code which creates a hyperlink with a parameter of "cookieAction" (either "delete" or "set"). In pageheader.html there is a section of code which parses the "cookieAction" part of the HTTP post and takes the appropriate action.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the reply.
Apologies for the need for detail but I cannot see the set cookie hyperlink on "PSP/home.html".
I am not familiar with javascript but I can see the code to check if the cookie exists but not the hyperlink itself.

Check line 31 in home.html. Here is the part that creates the set cookie hyperlink:

<a href="home.html?player=[% player | uri %]&cookieAction=set"><b>Click here to set this cookie and load images locally from the PSP</b></a>

First of all GREAT SKIN. It works great and you really did a great job. THANK YOU.

I wanted to inquire about the possibility of showing the title of the piece currently playing when using Internet Radio on the "Now Playing" screen. Both softsqueeze and Slimserver Web interface can parse this information. Currently I'm using live365.com and the now playing screen displays the URL connection like:

http://216.235.94.11:20372/play?membername=xxxxx&session=0hrclassical:0&AuthType=AFL&lid=900-US&token=bda5fb4f3b1627cd45d9443a8b048a29-1703070080101120&sessionid=xxxxx:VE18aHzlJfZW6PI1

whereas the Slimserver Web interface and softsqueeze both display the name (title) of the piece currently being played. Is this possible?

Once again, thank you very much, I truly enjoy using the interface. In one room the Squeezebox is too far away to read it and the PSP SlimServer skin gives me all the cool features of the competing Sonus Remote product, but with all the GREAT features of SlimServer and all-in at a lower cost. And it switches easily between my two squeezeboxes and my transporter. very cool.

Thanks again.

P.S. To speed up the setup loading the skin images, I setup the first one as you said, then removed the Memory Stick, mounted it on my Mac and copied all the rest of the images from the Skin directory (PSP/html/images) to the Memory Stick, then replaced the Memory Stick in the PSP. You were right, it makes a huge difference in performance. Thanks.

OK, rblim. I figured out how to display titles from internet radio just like the squeezebox. In status.html, on line 135 change the reference to "itemobj.title" to "songtitle". That's it. Let me know if that works for you. - Tim

rblim

Hi Tim

Indeed the fix you gave me worked perfectly. THANK YOU!!!

{{OK, rblim. I figured out how to display titles from internet radio just like the squeezebox. In status.html, on line 135 change the reference to "itemobj.title" to "songtitle". That's it. Let me know if that works for you. - Tim}}

However, I may have discovered another bug in Internet Radio, specifically with live365.com (only one I've tested thus far).

When you nagivate to "Internet Radio" then "Live365.com" and then to ACCOUNT and "log in" everything seems to work fine.

Next, if (at the top) you select "My Presets" (from amongst the genre choices) the next screen says "Not Logged into Live365.com" and the "My Presets" are not displayed. It does not appear that you are actually "logged out" because you can select "Genres" or any other choice and it gives you back that selection and any station playing continues to play.

However, selecting "My Presets" never retrieves the user's presets from live365.com as the Squeezebox does. Any ideas?

Thanks again. Unless you get tired of me, I'll continue testing the PSP Skin and reporting my finds. Greatly appreciate all the time and effort you have put in. I showed this to a friend who has Sonos, and now he's upset because Sonos is certainly not as complete nor as feature-rich a "system as SlimServer is. And with PSP Skin and a Sony PSP you get all the same glitz os a Sonos remote. Very kewl!!

tmarti

Keep the feedback coming, rblim. I don't use the internet radio features much, so that area of the skin could use some attention. Also if anyone is using the playlist functionality, I suspect that needs some work (I use iTunes and manage my playlists through it). I'll try to fix whatever comes in. Let me know if anyone wants to pitch in.

I couldn't replicate what you described, rblim. The skin doesn't do anything special for the internet radio plugins, so I couldn't see anything funky with the PSP skin here. Just to be sure, can you test it out on another skin? - Tim

My most humble apologies for the slow reply. I tried for 3 days to duplicate the problem I can unsuccessfully, then on the fourth day it happened. So....I need to take careful notice of what occurred before and the way I entered Internet Radio from the Skin to find out how to duplicate it. Once I can reproduce the error 'on call' I'll repost the problem.

Thank you for your patience and assistance. I continue to enjoy using PSP skin.

Well, I happened to already have a web server in my house, so I just dropped the files in my htdocs web root folder and edited the xml file to match my slimserver address.

If you don't have a web server, assuming you have Windows you can get a WAMP (Windows,Apache,MySQL,PHP) stack from any one of dozens of sources. Here's a popular and easy to install stack.
http://www.wampserver.com/en/

Once you install it, just put the two files in a folder that has rights for any web user to execute the php script.

I thought that since SS got a web interface it would have some web server capabilities and that I could use that together with these files in some smart way. But I guess not.
I run Linux btw (Ubuntu), I guess that would be a LAMP solution for me then :)

I have noticed another problem that is more on-topic in this thread...
No matter how I browse on the psp it will always display the cover art. This is quite annoying when for example browsing by artist or genre. I suppose it should only be this way when browsing by Artwork.
Correction: it don't show the cover art but the layout is the same as for Artwork but no cover is displayed only a white area. I would prefer a more compact list view. (Hope my rambling makes sense)

SlimboJimbo

I have now fixed my problems with the layout always being that of artwork.

I edited the file home.html at the end of that file there is a block to display the main menu. I just added &artwork=0 to the options that I want presented in a list view.
Looks like this now:

<td width="90" align="center"><a href="browsedb.html?player=[% player | uri %]&hierarchy=playlist,playlistTrack&level=0&artwork=0" tabbindex="6">
<img src="[% imagePath %]playlist.gif" border="0" height="34" width="40"><br><font class="menutext">[% "PLAYLIST" | string %]</a></td>
<td width="90" align="center"><a href="browsedb.html?hierarchy=genre,contributor,album,tr ack&level=0&player=[% player | uri %]&artwork=0" tabbindex="7">
<img src="[% imagePath %]genre.gif" border="0" height="34" width="40"><br><font class="menutext">[% "GENRE" | string %]</a></td>
<td width="90" align="center"><a href="browsedb.html?hierarchy=contributor,album,track&level=0&player=[% player | uri %]&artwork=0" tabbindex="8">
<img src="[% imagePath %]artist.gif" border="0" height="34" width="40"><br><font class="menutext">[% "ARTIST" | string %]</a></td>
<td width="90" align="center"><a href="browsedb.html?hierarchy=album,track&level=0&player=[% player | uri %]&artwork=0" tabbindex="9">

<td width="90" align="center"><a href="browsedb.html?hierarchy=album,track&level=0&player=[% player | uri %]&artwork=1" tabbindex="10">
<img src="[% imagePath %]artwork.gif" border="0" height="34" width="40"><br><font class="menutext">[% "COVERART" | string %]</a></td>

Maybe this can help someone else with the same problem.

Sorry yes I was using the IP address (silly forgetfullness that). If I use the name it can't resolve it.... when I use IP address the PSP just says the connection to the server timed out (without ever loading anything at all). Very odd. I can surf internet stuff fine on the psp....

I got the skin working except for the local image caching. On the PSP Player Setup page, I can click the link to set the Cookie, and it gets set (I double checked by having the PSP ask me for acceptance) but when I go back to that page then, it will still tell me the cookie is "NOT set to use PSP local images." :(.

PS: also the skin seems to be slightly different from the screenshots in the openingpost : I don't get the increasing bars in the volume indication. I just get a straight line with black showing the volume.

I just tried to download the PSP zip file, but Windows says it's in invalid folder (it appears to be empty). Tried on two PCs. One running XP, the other Vista.
Anyone point me to a valid copy, or suggest what might be going wrong with my download?
Really looking forward to seeing this skin on my PSP, now that I've worked out how to set the PSP up to connect to SS.

PS. I spent about two hours trying to type in my 63 character WPA key into the PSP and kept getting an error on the PSP telling me that the key contained invalid characters. Anybody know what the limitations are on the PSP Key format? Mine contained all the special characters <*[]\+!> as well as 0-9 and A-Z. Had to change to a simpler WPA key, but I don't want to keep it so simple for fear of it being unsecure. Also because I don't want to have to re-type the new simple key into all my other wireless devices.

Really weird, but the ZIP-file is invalid and onnly 60kB when downloading it with IE7, but not so when downloading it with Firefox (then it's 74kB and working)

I tried the skin on Slimserver 6.3.
Unfortunately, it does not work. It seems there are not all tags supported in SS6.3. Does anybody knows, what I have to change in this wonderful PSP skin to get it work on SS6.3?

Do you intend to make a version of the PSP skin for the new SqueezeCenter 7? I was going to upgrade until I read that the plug-ins would all need to be revised and I use your PSP skin all the time. Just curious if you intended to update it for SC7. Thanks as always for creating this skin. It's been great.

I too am curious if anyone can get this to work with squeezecenter 7.0. I am thinking of purchasing a psp and this would probably push me into doing it.

I juat upgraded to 7.0 and now it won't run on my controller, a PSP........D R A T S.
The front page is now much more complex. This is very annoying. There should have been some kind of a warning that the new page is much more memory intensive.
The new skin has much too much going on for my needs.

This is awesome but a shame it won't work with 7.0. Is anyone working on an update?

Hi all, I am considering upgrading (or rewriting) the skin to work with the new SqueezeCenter 7.x. I've stalled on this because of all the work associated with it - at first blush it is not trivial. Let me do some more investigating. But thanks for your positive comments about the skin. I'm glad to hear others have found it useful.

I finally upgraded the PSP skin to be compatible with v7.0. See attached. Let me know what you think.

Tim, well done, this looks cool. Don't think it'll replace the controller for day to day use but browsing with the bigger album covers is nice.

Couldn't see how to switch players on/off but that maybe me.

Does anyone know how to stream to PSP as well?

First of all, thx for this great skin.
I have three (minor) problem with it (see attachment)
- the top of the skin is approx. 10 pixels moved down
- in the "while playing screen" (WPS) theres a "undefined" text below the cover ($VAR1)
- skipping in the WPS works only once, another press on FW does nothing
Has anyone else the same problems ?

btw, streaming to PSP: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42289&highlight=psp+stream

Thanks for the feedback Mitch and Pilot1000. I'll be posting a new version shortly that has a couple of fixes:
- added on/off buttons to the Change Player screen
- removed the $VAR below album cover in Now Playing screen - it is a remnant of some debugging I was doing :0)

I'll look into the 10 pixel top margin - my PSP screen broke and I haven't replaced it yet, so I'm running blind on that one. Also I'll look into the double skip issue.

Attached is the latest version. No fix for the top margin or the double skip - couldn't reproduce either of those. Are you still seeing those issues?

Sorry for the dumb question, but how do you implement the skin once you download it?

Unzip it to the HTML folder in the squeezebox directory and then point your browser to http://localhost:9000/PSP. That's it.

Have done an excessive testing yesterday with the new version on the PSP. Actually I'm running SS7.2 on a Synology DS107+.
There's a general refresh problem on the PSP (over the browser on the PC everything works perfect). Each time when I press skip forward/ skip backward or when I select another song than the actually playing one, I have to manually refresh the browser on the PSP. Is it possible to force a refresh after each action ?

btw. thanks a lot for your hard work.

Hi Pilot, thanks for the note. Unfortunately my testing on the PSP has come to a screeching halt since my PSP is broken. But I still am committed to maintaining the skin, especially since I picked up an iPod Touch and the PSP skin works great on it (with some minor tweaks - iPeng was bit too heavyweight for me). Clearly what you are seeing is a PSP browser issue. I ran into plenty of these while creating the skin. Are there any links that work without a explicit refresh? This is a stretch, but do have caching enabled? If so, can you try disabling it? PSP browser caching was a little funky earlier (which is why I had to go through all the hurdles of setting cookies to load images locally - they never seemed to cache properly - they would reload every time).

Let me know.

And thanks for the feedback,
- Tim

@tmarti
tkx a lot for maintaining the skin even if your PSP is broken.

Have tested today where a refresh is necessary and where not:
- first of all, it makes no difference if caching is enabled or not

home screen:
-everything works perfect

while playing screen:
- refresh needed after 2nd skip forward/backward
- no refresh needed on stop/play/pause
- volume control does not work at all
- change repeat/shuffle seems to be ok

playlist screen:
- refresh needed to mark correct playing song
- refresh needed after all actions (eg. move down/up, delete, ...)
- when select "play song" the screen changes to the while playing screen and displays the correct song information -> ok
- download will save a file to the PSP (playlist file .m3u) -> ok
- save does save a playlist with title "without title" -> ok

playlist manipulation -> same issues as in the playlist screen

one other thing:
- have you found a solution to fix the top margin issue (approx 15 pixels between top of screen and beginning of the skin on all screens)?

I hope the information above is helpful.
If you need more specific testing, I'll check this forum/thread more often than in the past.

Pilot and other PSP skinners, I just merged a couple of my efforts together into a single skin called "Mobile". I basically took my PSP skin and modified it to be more compatible with the iPhone & iPod Touch. The Mobile skin retains all the features and capabilities of the original PSP skin - although there are some minor changes to the "Now Playing" screen. Check out the Mobile skin at: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=339509#post339509. Moving forward, I'm going to make all-PSP specific changes to the Mobile skin, so please switch over to that if you want to stay up-to-date on modifications.

Pilot, thanks for your recent post. I'm investigating now.

Two quick things:

1) The PSP skin was included in an updated version of a generic lightweight skin for all Mobile devices: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=339509#post339509. It retains all the features of the PSP skin but with some added functionality.

2) Once you grab the latest version of Mobile.zip from that thread, unzip the folder to your HTML directory (not the Plugins directory), and just point your browser to http://your_server_ip_address:9000/HTML/Mobile, and you should be all set.

Let me know if you have issues or suggestions for enhancements.
