View Full Version : Playing all genres *except* one?

Hi all,

I'm a long-time Slimp3 owner and I've never found an easy answer to this
question. Maybe it's obvious but I'm missing something.

Say I want to play all music in the "Rock" genre. No problem, right?
Just select the genre and it adds all tracks of that genre to the playlist.

But, suppose I want to play all music *except* the "Rock" genre. Is
there any way to add all genres *except* one?

The specific example is, we have a ton of holiday music that we play
during the December month all the time, kinda like background music.
When December is over, we want to return to our normal rotation of music
and exclude the entire "Holiday" genre.

Is there an easy way to do this that I'm missing?

Thanks in advance!

Not in a single click. However, what you can try is using the Fishbone skin,
Browse Artists, click the red [+] icon beside 'All Albums' to add the entire
collection to the playlist. Then choose Browse Genres and click the [-] icon
for the genre you want excluded. The [-] icon removes a list of files from the
playlist. It can be used for a given artist, album, or genre.

I will try that, thanks.

Do you know of any way to do it from the Slimp3 device itself?

no. I dont think there is any current button mapping to use the subtract
command. Pressing REC removes a single song, pressing and hold removes it and
adds the file to a special playlist called zapped.m3u for reference later.

I dont even think you can trick a search into working this way. '-christmas' in
a search genre would do it if you follow search engine logic, but the server
doesn't allow that currently.

You could create the playlists using the web interface, save them and access
them from the slimp3 that way. I know it's not ideal as you have to build
them in advance and rebuild them if you music collection changed.
