I'm about to begin the process of ripping my entire collection to an external HDD, but was thinking about buying an inexpensive external CD-ROM to do so, so that I don't overuse the one in my Mac Mini. Will any USB CD-ROM do, or do I specifically have to use one for a mac? A USB device is a USB device, right? Thanks,

Steve

I do the same thing. I have a Mac Mini and not only am I concerned
about the extra wear and tear on the internal drive, but I find that
the internal drive is much slower for ripping anyway. It really is a
laptop drive afterall.

I have a leftover internal drive from an old PC. I just sits on my
desk, no external case or anything. I have a USB/IDE adapter I bought
at newegg.com for something like $10 or $20. It works great and rips
are faster. No special drive needed. An added benefit is it moves
the heat out of the Mini case. Also, this way I can just toss the
drive and use yet another old spare I happen to have if necessary.

I'd suggest using Max to rip the music on the Mac. You can enable
several levels of error correction and it will encode to MP3 using
LAME.
