View Full Version : SqueezeFox - Slimserver extension for Firefox

Hi everyone, first post and all that...

I've made an extension that lets you control your slimserver from inside Firefox (1.5+). It's inspired by a similar extension by Matt Welsh, but with some additional features:

(You might need to right-click and "Save link as...")
http://graphicmedicine.com/squeezefox/SqueezeFox-0.8.1.xpi LATEST
http://graphicmedicine.com/squeezefox/SqueezeFox-0.7.2.xpi

As always, let me know what you think of this version

v0.8.1 ---

Added multiple player support (beta)
added mute and stop buttons
rewritten XML handler to use a third-party xml->json parser (makes things work better)
Re-enabled artwork notifications on track change
Improvements for shoutcast/generic stream support

v0.7.2 ---

Added the much-requested 'statusbar popup notification thingy' :D
Added settings to show/hide the notifications, volume bar, and current track statusbar
Various tweaks and code improvements

v0.6 ---

I've cleaned up a lot of the javascript, and fixed the issue where it would cause firefox to 'crap out', and (hopefully) fixed the volume slider bug

Added a statusbar to display the current track title

Currently only supports 1 player, but I'm planning on resolving this next, for you lucky, lucky people with more than 1 squeezebox (or transporter)

v0.5 ---

Define an server url/port for non localhost servers
Tooltip shows the currently playing track
Added Next/Previous track buttons
Slider updates to show the current volume level (and displays it on a tooltip)

and a few others, mostly more efficient javascript functions and the like

---------

Known Issues:
the volume slider can be a bit unpredictable - FIXED in 0.6
'Craps out' Firefox memory usage/SlimServer CPU load - FIXED in 0.6
Only supports 1 squeezebox/transporter - FIXED in 0.8
iTunes' dodgy tags cause crap-outs on slimserver 6.5.x by corrupting the XML data - not fixable on my end :(

In Development:
Ability to set the server settings from the statusbar icon menu - ADDED in 0.6
Pop up statusbar notification alert on track change - ADDED in 0.7
Support for multiple Squeezebox/transporters ADDED in 0.8
Album artwork in notification ENABLED in 0.8

You're right about the volume! I tried it out at work using my SSH tunnel through Softsqueeze and if I adjusted the volume on SqueezeFox SoftSqueeze went nuts. It looked like the two were fighting each other for what to do with the volume.

i think it's something to do with me trying to be too clever :(

one of the fucntions is supposed to update the volume slider to reflect the volume level reported by the server, but it sometimes seems to get stuck in a loop :(

i'll give it some more fiddling tonight, and see if i cant get it fixed for 0.6

Wow, very nice! Good work greebowarrior!

May want to add it to http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?PluginRemoteControls Matt hasn't updated his Firefox extension for quite some time now - not even sure if it's compatible with 6.5.0+.

Nice Idea...but won't load in my version of Firefox Ver 2.0.0.3..

I had to save the .xpi installer to my computer then use File -> Open to install it.

I have done that, it comes up with the error:-

Incompatible Extension
Slimserver Control 1.0 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox 2.0.0.3.
(Slimserver Control 1.0 will only work with Firefox versions from 0.9 to 2.0)

Installed fine for me in 2.0.0.3.

I see problems with multiple players, though. It seems unable to always keep track of which is the current player, plus it interferes with the web interface, causing the current player to sometimes be a target other than what is displayed.

Works great in 2.0.0.3 on Linux for me.

Great work!

Some feature wishes follows:

Maybe it would be a good idea to make it possible to also open the songinfo page for the currently playing song besides open up SlimServer it self ?

The volume slider is completely useless to me since I use the volume control on the reciever to change the volume. Would it be possible to add an option to hide the volume slider since it uses unneccesary screen space now ?

It would also be great if it could display the currently playing song somewhere, if this is possible. It probably takes up to much screen space to show it always, but maybe it could be shown a few seconds after a new track starts to play ?

And now when I am wishing, it would be great if it was possible to change the rating for the currently playing song. There is a CLI interface in the TrackStat plugin that makes this possible. TrackStat needs to be installed though.

Is it possible to show other things than text in the tooltips ? If it is, it would be great to also show the albumart in the tooltip of the currently playing song.

It displays the currently-playing song as a tooltip over the player image for me.

For me too, but I have to move the mouse over the player image. I would like it to be displayed without having to move the mouse.

Basically I am looking for a replacement for the toast feature in Moose which runs on Linux, even though this Firefox extension isn't the perfect solution it is a good start since Firefox is open most of the time.

Cool toy, but I must be missing something. If firefox is open, then you're (at most) one click from the full web interface, where you can not only perform the two or three tasks offered by this addon, but many more.

Looks great, but I think I gave my GF a scare when I inadvertently
started up my Study-SB (while I'm in the living room).

How does this work in multi-SB installations?

Cool toy, but I must be missing something. If firefox is open, then you're (at most) one click from the full web interface, where you can not only perform the two or three tasks offered by this addon, but many more.Lets say I am surfing some other web page, for example this forum, the only thing I need is:
1. See what track is playing, I can basically just glance over the computer screen and look at the SqueezeBox to do this, but it would be nice to see it somewhere directly on the computer screen without needing to move the mouse.

2. See the rating and maybe more information such as album art of the track that is playing. If I click on the on the player icon in the Firefox extension a new webpage will be opened and my reading on the original web site I was looking at is interrupted and the original page is moved in the background.

3. Change the rating of the currently playing song. This either requires me to open the slimserver web interface and click a few times to get into the TrackStat page, or reach for the remote control and rate the track. If I could do this without changing page in the web browser it would be great.

Ooops, sorry!

i'm not sure how it'll handle it, as i only have 1 squeezebox to work with. but i could do theoretical development, if you can send me a save page of /xml/status_header.xml from your slimserver (i.e. http://localhost:9000/xml/status_header.xml), and i can work from there

mind you, im currently trying to sort out the dodgy volume slider :s

cheers for the input everyone, i'll try to get as many features into squeezefox as possible

Regards,
PeterI think I have seen something similar, it looks like Firefox is starting to slow down after a while. I'm not completely sure that the cause is this extension but I haven't seen the problem previously. The slowdown is solved in my setup by restarting Firefox.

Also another issue, the slimserver machine uses a lot of CPU when this extension is installed. I suspect it maybe polls slimserver to check the status a bit to often ?
I'm not sure how the extension works, but maybe it would be possible to just issue a "listen" CLI command and then just wait for events when something happens ?

The extension is still great, but I had to temporarily turn it off until the above issues has been solved.

i've looked into this, and it seems i was being a bit overzealous with requests to the server to update the track information. the latest version (being uploaded soon) has had that removed, while i look into possible alternatives that don't crap out firefox

i'll add that to the 'to do' list.
not entirely sure how i'd go about it though, doesn't seem to be many tutorials on that online.

I'm currently fiddling with multiple player support now, might have something to show for it by next week

Sorry, I can't use it unless I can specify the SB to use.
Now it stubbornly insists on controlling only my attic SB3.

Thanks for this, seems to be working great except that sometimes the track title will update promptly by itself, and sometimes it won't update unless I click on it.

Here's a feature request: Click and hold or right click on song title shows popup of some part of the current playlist, maybe past 5 and coming 10 tracks, and then these could be selected to play that track.

I'd also like to see album art popup as a tool tip over the track title, but I don't know if tool tips even can do such a thing. I also agree with being able to hide the volume control for those of us who use our amp volume. Song info page as an option in the squeezebox icon popup seems like a good idea too.

Rock on!

I can't get this to work... it just says 'Fetching server data' in the status bar. I've tried changing the port from 9000 (default) to 9090 (I presume for the CLI). No dice. I've tried inside my firewall and out (with appropriate rules for out). Still no go.

I've noticed the CLI shows some crazy characters whatever client I use. All sorts of escape characters. I couldn't find an y docs for it on the wiki... anyone have anything else?

e.g.:

When I have Squeezefox enabled, I notice some odd behaviour with some popups (for example, with the "reveal image" or "larger image" links on some BBC News pages, such as on <http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/default.stm>).

The popup's contents aren't formatted correctly in its window, and are duplicated in the main window. Also, a small grey window is created on the top left of my display; it does nothing, sits on top of everything else, can't be moved, and won't go away even when I close the original popup or even exit firefox entirely. (So far, I've only managed to get rid of it by killing off the remaining firefox.exe process from Task Manager).

The behaviour disappears when I disable Squeezefox and restart Firefox. Of course, it could be misinteraction with one of my other add-ons, but I don't feel like turning them all off to confirm this.

Thanks for the great Firefox plugin!

I realize that there is a difference between pause and stop. Thius it'd be great if both functions are available in SqueezeFox.

While you're thinking about it, a "Mute" would also fair nicely.

I've been crazy busy lately, I develop this extension at work, but we've been trying to launch our latest software version (and crunching the associated bugs) for ages now, and things seem to have cooled off a bit.

I have managed to implement the stop button, and I'm working on the muting functionality.

the next release should also have the artwork pop-up re-enabled. i'd been having some troubles with it displaying at a consistent size, but think i may have nailed it now. just need a windows machine to test it with ;)

Supporting multiple players seems to be a bit of a pain in the ass, but I'm still trying.

In the current version, in Firefox on a Mac OS 10.4.9 (other info about my system in my sig) the track title rarely updates on its own, usually only when I click on it. So like this, not much better than clicking on the tab for my full browser interface, but I really like the idea, haven't uninstalled it yet, and eagerly await your new version. Thanks for all your efforts!

version 0.8 is now out
http://graphicmedicine.com/squeezefox/SqueezeFox-0.8.xpi

changes:
- Added stop and mute buttons
- Rewrote the entire httprequest handler to use a JS parser library, now seems less buggy
- enabled artwork notifications
- MULTIPLE SQUEEZEBOX SUPPORT, allows you to decide which play you want to control (bit buggy, but seems to work)

please install from the above url, as firefox add-ons is being a pain today

KNOWN ISSUES

iTunes dodgy tags makes the XML invalid, and as such, it wont do much at all, and you'll be stuck 'fetching server data'
only way i know how to fix this is to open /HTML/xml/_xml_song.html on your slimserver, and remove the following line

Thanks! Squeezefox in the status bar is updating within a few seconds when playing now.

Still takes about two minutes to update when skipping tracks either with the remote or the browser UI.

I'm also not seeing any artwork on track changes, though I have this setting checked. Not sure what it's supposed to look like. Could you post a screen shot? Maybe I'm missing something. Let me know if I can help you in any way with troubleshooting this.

Seems that the mute button also does nothing if one is using an external amp for volume control, and so should also be hidden when the volume slider is hidden, yes?

Thanks again for all your work.

no problems, this was bothering me too, as i usually listen to web streams in the office

Still takes about two minutes to update when skipping tracks either with the remote or the browser UI.

this is because the update rate is calculated by the current song as (length-elapsed)+5. In an earlier version, it checked every 5-10 seconds, which made it go a bit mental. i could code it to check at intervals no more than 30 seconds, but i'll have to make sure it wont bog down firefox again.

I'm also not seeing any artwork on track changes, though I have this setting checked.

Yeah, i realised this when i installed it on my windows xp test server. i think i may have broken something in the recode, so i'll get this sorted tomorrow morning, although i dont think the notifications service is part of the mac version

Seems that the mute button also does nothing if one is using an external amp for volume control, and so should also be hidden when the volume slider is hidden, yes?

thats a very good point, again, i'll fix that in the morning.

Some of the album art I have is very large, especially if it's an old record and someone has gone to the trouble of making a nice scan, I just throw it in the directory with the music.

Anyway, my whole 1280x800 laptop screen was overcome by a giant album cover that slowly engulfed the whole screen as it struggled to scroll up, for about a minute the whole machine was unusable, as it looked like a close up of an album cover missile launch across the screen then it subsided and everything went back to normal.

Given I put the humungo artwork in there, I take full responsibility, but it was a funny moment.

Thanks for a great plugin!

yeah, this is a bit of a known issue. SqueezeFox depends on your server being able to dynamically resize the image. I'm running SlimNAS, and it won't do it, dunno why though.

sorry about that, but i don't think i can do anything about it :S

With the update to 0.8.1, it is back to taking a long time to update the track title every time, and at the moment that it is updating, Firefox freezes (OS X spinning beachball) for several seconds. This also happens if I click on Squeezefox to force an update. Skipping tracks with Squeezefox 0.8.1 is now sluggish and gives the beachball freeze for a few seconds too.

Still no album artwork, but I think you said that is not expected to work in the Mac version.

Can I get a link to v0.8 to use until this is fixed? The periodic freezing of the browser became annoying enough that I've had to disable Squeezefox for the time being.

The link for v0.8 originally posted above still worked, so I successfully downgraded.

I'll put up with the superfluous mute button for smooth functionality.

Incidentally, I think 0.8.1 was also occasionally breaking playback of tracks: In the middle of a track there would be a crackling artifact or two then playback would stop. FF, RW, or Stop then Play would get things going again. Never noticed that behavior before 0.8.1, and it hasn't happened since downgrading to 0.8.

Hope this is helpful to you.

it's been fetching for a day now, still nothing. and the server settings are correct because if i click "go to slimserver" it loads up fine.

At least on SqueezeCenter (7.0 nightly 11/11) I needed to reduce the security setting for CSRF to "None" for SqueezeFox 0.8.1 to work, otherwise I got the same "Fetching Server Data" error

I'll look into this soon, and try to get it resolved. I've been extremely busy with work, and haven't had the time to so any development to squeezefox

You'll be glad to know that when i do get a chance, i'm also planning on testing it for Firefox 3.0b too

Great extension - very handy when you have music playing and the remote out of range. I have come across a weird and somewhat annoying bug, though:

When I have this extension installed, I get a very long delay when opening popup windows - sometimes it takes 15 seconds from the time I click the link until the popup window opens!

I have tried disabling the extension and then the delay is gone, so it must somehow be responsible for the behaviour.

Try this page: http://www.themusic.com/detail.cfm?id=9002299

Click on the small cd cover and see if you can reproduce it. For me it takes about 10 seconds for the popup to show, and when it does, it is not the correct size.
