View Full Version : Fails to play m4a files

I have identical 6.5.2 slimservers with same music files on two different PCs at home & work.
My work setup works fine, but home PC fails to play non-DRM m4a files with following log.

The PC that fails has Avast antivirus instead of Symantec.
Both have ZoneAlarm which is configured correctly.

The socketwrapper is the new one from http://homepage.eircom.net/~altondsl/slim/socketwrapper_0.12_20060220.zip

Any ideas ?

I'll try to reproduce the problem to see if it is security s/w related.

What version of Avast are you using - Professional or Home ?
What version of ZoneAlarm.
Since Avast and ZoneAlarm have overlapping security features - which one did you install first ?

Does the problem happen with other sources that require transcoding ?

Does the problem happen if you disable in File Types the Windows Media (Built-in) and play a known working WMA source (this should trigger transcoding) ?

Edit:
There are many ZoneAlarm and Avast compatability issues - for example see
http://www.avast.com/eng/webshield_issues.html#idt_6869

ZA is 7.0.302 and Avast is 4.7.942 Home edition but I think I have a different cause

I got this error when running on the command line:

So are both the Avast and ZA the free versions ?

The 10061 error was because you did not set up the socket 3645 for output - Slimserver will have done it when it starts socketwrapper.

How have you configured ZA and Avast to make sure they don't trip over each other ?

I did a quick test on a Windows system with ZA and Avast - same versions as you have - both free and using default config. ZA installed first.

No problems playing AlienBBC and also transcoding a WMA file for Softsqueeze.

Are your problems only with AAC files or with all file types that use transcoding ?

bpa, thanks for your testing, both are indeed the free versions on my PC. Don't remember which was installed first...
I will try other transcoding as you suggested & post back.
Also, I will try reinstalling latest quicktime, just in case mov123 relies on external libraries.

I think my problem was due to a mismatch between the db & filesystem.
A fresh install + a fresh scan from scratch + quicktime reinstall resolved it.

However I noticed this in the logs
