View Full Version : SB won't play

I'm a long time squeezebox user and I'm suddenly having a problem I have not seen before. My SB is up and running, but I cannot play music. I can navigate to a song, but when I hit Play it just sits there at 0:00 of the song and nothing happens. The server is up and running and responsive.

I tried power cycling the SB and restarting the server, but neither had any effect. Any thoughts on where to go to debug this?

Thanks.

What SB model do you have? What firmware is it using? What version of Slimserver?

By "power cycling", do you mean unplugging the SB's power supply or holding the Power button such that the Slim Devices and Squeezebox logos appear on the screen?

I had the same bug issue. Try rebooting your SB by pressing the standby button on your remote and keep pressing it until the SB's logon screen appears on your SB.

Hope this helps for you as well.

Also check your firewall software on your server.

The SB needs to be able to connect back to the server to actually play an audio file and if the server is blocking connections, the client can't fetch the file (but the server can still update the SB display...)

Sorry, I wasn't very informative there. Squeezebox is the first gen -- the one that replaced the slimp3, purchased back in 2003. Looks like the firmware is version 40. Slimserver reports itself as, "SlimServer Version: 6.2.1 - 5194 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252"

I know there are newer versions of the server, but it's been running flawlessly for months and months. And if it ain't broke...

The former.

If you are playing a file that needs transcoding, this can happen if the a codec app fails to work/ run.

If the problem happens when you are playing an MP3 file - open a debug window and enable d_source and see what is happening.

OK, it's probably not the SB2/SB3 firmware bug, then. :-/

Have you recently installed/upgraded Windows Media Player? I've seen posts suggesting that WMP 11 conflicts with the TCP port used by Slimserver for the Web UI and providing audio to Squeezeboxes:

Lots of good responses here. Thank you everyone. I'll address what folks have sent so far...

Stef wrote, "I had the same bug issue. Try rebooting your SB by pressing the standby button on your remote and keep pressing it until the SB's logon screen appears on your SB."

OK, I tried that (well, I press the "Power" button on my old remote) and it did go through the setup cycle. Same behavior, though.

Snarlydwarf wrote, "Also check your firewall software on your server."

Did that. In fact I turned the firewall off completely for a bit just to check. No change in behavior.

peterw wrote, "Have you recently installed/upgraded Windows Media Player? I've seen posts suggesting that WMP 11 conflicts with the TCP port used by Slimserver for the Web UI and providing audio to Squeezeboxes:"

No, no changes to Windows Media player. Never use it.

It's MP3. I actually forgot that you could just run the server in a terminal window and watch the output. The tail end of the log file is below...perhaps it means more to others than it does to me.

Thanks again to all who have posted here.
