View Full Version : Player being pinged?

Last night and again tonight I noticed that my SLIMP3's display is
reporting that it's being pinged every minute or so. Some of the IPs
are the same, some are close to each other, all seem to be coming from
my ISP (but not my internal network).

Should I be concerned? What can I do to trace the source(s) of these
pings?

Thanks.

A procedural question: why do pings make it past your router in the first
place? And why would your SliMP3s have routable IP addresses?

Well, it's obvious that your network is being scanned. If the source
addresses are ISP-local, then it's probably other customers of your ISP
either misbehaving or having been trojaned. Yes, you should be concerned.
Your best move is to get a NAT router for your network ingress and convert
your internal network to RFC1918 addresses. I use a Linksys BEFSR11
(available for around $50 these days) into an 8-port 10/100 switch and it's
proved solid and dependable. Netgear, D-Link and SMC all have similar units
at competetive prices.

Ummm, icmp is not in the normal port spaces of tcp or udp... Yes you should
block it but there will be special syntax to do so. If you can, try just
blocking incoming echo request packets, that way things like port unreachables
from other places you try to talk to can still get to you.
