View Full Version : Strange remote control behavior

Hi!

I own a Squeezebox 3 which I'm very satisfied with. I'm actually considering buying another one for the kitchen. But... after successfully been using the device for almost a year, suddenly I get some strange behavior.

When using the remote control, every button works okay - but only for a total of 5-8 clicks. It doesn't care which button I pushes, I can skip songs by pressing forward 5-8 times, then it doesn't respond any more. Or I could press play/pause 5-8 times - then nothing. Very strange indeed.

If I then wait like 2-3 minutes then I can push another 5-8 times before it locks up. During the 'lock-up' it does not affect the music I'm playing.

So the device works perfectly using only the HTTP-GUI. But I would really like to get the remote working again. Just to be clear, I've tried to change the batteries in the remote, but the way this show, it doesn't feel like a hardware issue.

I'm have been using Slimserver 6.5.1, but after I got this problem I upgraded to 6.5.2 just to be sure. But it didn't make a difference. Any ideas at all would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
CH

It isn't anything as straight forward as duff batteries is it?

No, as I said. The first thing I tried was replacing the batteries.

Hello again!

Some progress in my troubleshooting...

I tried the 'factory reset' (add button on remote). It did successfully execute a factory reset. Afterwards I had to choose region, wireless network, enter wpa password etcetera. I have a rather long wpa password, and I experienced no problem at all entering it! The remote control works as a charm as long as I'm not in 'SlimServer-play-mode'.

I think that clearly points my problem to some sort of software error.

Best regards,
CH

See http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?DiagnosingPerformanceIssues , in particular the section on Server Performance.

Turn on performance monitoring, play a few tracks and get the remote to lock up a couple of times, then post the performance monitoring output.

Any performance tips?

What this is saying is that it thinks that the IR commands are being processed, it's just taking a long time for some reason. Up to almost 4 seconds.

The problem is, what's causing it?

Sure looks like your hardware should have the power but it wouldn't hurt to check CPU load.

Do you have any plugins? Could you try disabling them temporarily?

Currenthill
2007-03-11, 10:21
Okay...

About the plugins, don't really know which one of these I need to use:

Command Line Interface (CLI)
Date and Time Screensaver
Digital Inputs
Lagra låtlista
MoodLogic
Network Test
Random Mix
Real Rhapsody
Rescan Music Library
RS232
SlimTris
Snow Screensaver
Visualizer Screensaver
Windows: Prevent System Standby While Playing
XML-RPC/JSON-RPC Interface
xPL Interface

Which of the above plugins are required?

Regarding the CPU load, both the VM and the host OS reports no more than 10-20 % when I'm handling the remote. And both the VM and the host OS is reporting plenty of free memory.

Best regards,
CH

Wow, that's a lot of plugins. None are required really, but some are safer than others.

Okay...

About the plugins, don't really know which one of these I need to use:

Command Line Interface (CLI)
Date and Time Screensaver

Safe.

Digital Inputs

Not required for the SB.

Lagra låtlista

Don't know what this one is!

MoodLogic

This is a complicated, and from what I've seen on the forums, fairly problematic plugin.

Network Test
Random Mix

Safe.

Real Rhapsody

Complex, but I don't see too many problems with it on the forums.

Rescan Music Library

Haven't seen this causing problems.

RS232

Not required for the SB.

SlimTris
Snow Screensaver
Visualizer Screensaver
Windows: Prevent System Standby While Playing
XML-RPC/JSON-RPC Interface
xPL Interface

All safe.

This is just a hunch, but try disabling a few of these, particularly MoodLogic.

You're running under vmware? That would be the main suspect, then.
Try running SS on the host OS and see if that changes things.

Hi
You say everything was working fine for about a year until recently. Did you do anything "recently" to your system that might have caused this change in behaviour? Perhaps installed new software, changed firewall/anti-virus etc, or was that the time you went over to a VM system?

Hi!

No, I can't seem to remember changing anything for at least a couple of months. Not even a version upgrade of any software. The latest change was when I upgraded to SlimServer 6.5.2 today. Even though, I disabled all antivirus/spyware applications and tried it. To no avail.

Yes, my next move will be to test SS on the host OS, but it's rather peculiar since I've been running under VMware for quite some time now.

I run all my applications on my server under VMware since it makes it a lot easier to handle hardware failures. I have another server with VMware powered on to which I can fail over when needed.

Thank your for all your suggestions!

CH

LOL,

What can I say, it's a occupational hazard. I'm responsible for the server and storage environments at an insurance company. I can't seem to get disaster recovery plans out of my head. ;)

Albeit, I had to reboot the host OS due to patching. And I couldn't believe my eyes when I started the VM with SS and tried to recreate the hickup - nothing! It works fine now! My IR delays have decreased from >0.5 to 0.05 or less. The same with the web build processes.

So the old reboot-routine is still the primary windows problem solver. ;)

Thanks for all help! I appreciated it!

suddenly I get some strange behavior.

But I

Now that you mention it, I seem to have similar issues. I had assumed it was my remote batteries getting old, but I am quite sure its not that now.

I never ever saw anything similar with version 6.1 running even on a puny 1st Gen Linkstation, nor with v 6.5 on my g4 mac mini .... but now i'm on 6.5.1 on windows and that might have something to do with it....

this seems particularly pronounced when i have really long playlists running for several hours. All of a sudden, the remote become unresponsive, including volume, but the music continues unaffected. I noticed that the Nokia770 skin also suffers some performance lags at this time, though not as pronounced as the remote.

Hello,

I'm having the exact same problem with my 2 year old SB2. It worked flawlessly for nearly 2 years until recently. I haven't done any firmware or software updates in over 1 year. Not sure what versions I have installed.

It's very frustrating. As described the remote works for a few button presses at the beginning of each listening session then starts freezing up. The songs play unaffected. All buttons are non-responsive.

I'll also try disabling most plug-ins but I believe they are already stripped down.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Are you using it wirelessly? These is often the sort of problem you'll see if you're suffering from wireless interference (the music can frequently play on due to the large buffer). To isolate the problem you could try moving your box somewhere near your network switch and wiring it directly into your network. If the latency disappears then at least you know to start troubleshooting your wireless network.

Well, that does narrow things down a bit. Can we assume you've taken the other tips in the thread and tried a server-reboot and fresh batteries in the remote (the good response at the beginning of a session and poor response as you use it more would tend to point towards a battery problem)?

Well things have gone from bad to worse.
I thought it would be a good idea to update to the latest version of Slimserver. That went ok, until the point that the software demands that I upgrade my firmware version.

To initiate the firmware update I must press and hold the brightness button....NO GO! The remote is totally unresponsive.

This is very frustrating...I'm loosing my patience quickly. Time to take a break and try again later.

Thanks for the tip. Too bad I didn't do this before updating my version. I'm stuck in limbo.

This means either the ir receiver in the SB is bad (very unlikely) or the remote is physically failing (or has low batteries--but you replaced the batteries). If you have access to a video camera with an infrared "night" mode then you should be able to see if the remote is emitting a good, strong signal.

This morning I programmed my Harmony 550 to run my SB. Still no luck. The SB doesn't respond to the Harmony signals either.

This is very bizare. Now I'm thinking the SB is the culprit.
I might just buy a second SB just to see what happens. (any special promo's going on?)

Is the IR receiver in the SB easy to change? Is it a generic part?

Thanks to everyone who's responded so far!

Do you think this could help the IR reception of my SB.
I see it's intended to control additional devices, but I wonder if it has a side beneift.

Just got off the phone with technical support.
It seems there is definitely something wrong with my SB and/or Remote. After unplugging the power supply, you can press and holding the "Add" button while reconnecting the power to reset the SB to factory defaults. This function is independent of the network or Server. Since this fails on my unit, the communication between the remote and SB is suspect.

I'll be sending it to SlimDevices for repair.
I hope this has been helpful for someone out there.

Thanks to everyone who responded.
