Hi All,

I have just purchased my first squeezebox after looking at various devices for the last year including the logitech home dj. What I would like is a wifi controller that shows album art work track lists etc ie has the functionallity of the supplied remote but with a visual element and for it to work while anywhere in the house. ie not having to point it at a pecific squeezebox.
I would like to ask specifically if the Nokia 770 or any other wifi tablet can controll any and all squeezeboxes fitted in my house?

Regards

Jim

Hey, there's even a skin called "Nokia770" installed with slimserver. Give
it a try:
http://yourserverhere:9000/Nokia770/ - there's lot of information about it
available from these forums.

Or, alternatively on handhelds, the simpler "Handheld" skin.

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the reply. So I could use the Nokia to turn on the squeezebox in the upstairs shower room and sync it with the playlist currentlt playing in the living room etc?
As an aside I program web apps in Java. Is there some introductory info for potential contributors to the open source elements ? ie how the Nokia skin was written which language etc ?

Cheers

Jim

I haven't played around with the Nokia770 skin, but all the commands available to SlimServer are available to it, so it's possible but it depends if the developer (Ben Klaas) implemented it.

Here's a good starting point:

Most of the work is in perl. But a prime Java example is SoftSqueeze, which you can run by going to SlimServer Help - SoftSqueeze.

AJAX.

Mark has all points covered, just wanted to add that the functions you asked about, powering on/off, synching, are all available using the Nokia770 skin.

The skin itself is a modern browser-based application: HTML/CSS/Javascript/AJAX. It's built using Perl's Template Toolkit, which is the heart of how skins are put together for interfacing with slimserver. Documentation here:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SkinDevelopment

The other option is to build a standalone app that communicates with slimserver through either http or it's CLI. There are several existing projects that do this, softsqueeze (java), moose (.NET), slimFX (flash) to name a few. This route may appeal to you if you are comfy in javaland.

One side note: java does not exist on the Nokia 770 or the newer model the N800 (which I hear is a big improvement).

cheers,

Hi All,

Thanks for the info. I have not seen the N770 but did use the N800 last week briefly and it looked ideal as a controller. I will look at the developer guide.

Thanks

Jim

Please check Canola player for Nokia 770/N800. http://openbossa.indt.org/canola/
Some videos http://xantus.vox.com/library/post/canola-nokia-770-media-player.html

I think that it will be the "ultimate" remote control if they add support to the slimserver. At this moment the source is closed, but it will be released including an API for plugin creation.

There is already a request to add slimserver support in Canola
