Have you tried changing the Digital Volume control function in the
Server.
And then adjust the volume (via the server) to 10, then 11?

If that does not work, you've stumped me....
If it's a bad unit, it's the first one I've heard of on this
Group.
The good news is that when you get one working You'll love it!

Good luck.

I've tried 3~4 albums full of mp3 songs (with no special characters),
they all play fine via the slimserver from other hosts (WMP, xmms,
mplayer), just not from the squeezebox.

Yup, tried that already.

So I've heard, I'm really looking forward to using it (hence the
overnight delivery for Christmas!).

Thanks,
