In 6.5.1, when the server setting for compilations "You can choose to have compilation albums appear together..." is set to "List compilation ablums under each artist" every single artist for the album is displayed in album lists. I don't normally use that setting, but I can understand people wanting all the VA artists to appear in the artist list. But the way it causes the album to be displayed seems pretty ridiculous.

Is this the intended behavior?

Ok, I'm new to this lark, but I'd come to much the same conclusion as this previous post.

I'd rather not see every artist listed because they have one track in my library. Once one has a number of compilation the artist list becomes very long. But neither do I want my Blues compliations list ed with Movie Soundtracks under the one "Various Artists" umbella.

Can we have "Compilation Album list by Album Artist" option please?

Use the alternative setting "Group compilation albums together". This will suppress the artists that only appear on compilation albums. They should still be searchable and will appear under the album listing, just not in artist listings.

My question was really one about the display of the albums when the "List compilation ablums under each artist" option is selected. I know a lot of changes are constantly being made to the way VA albums are handled, with many unintended side-effects, so it wouldn't surprise me if the ugly album display above was unnoticed by any of the developers or the beta testers. Then again, it wouldn't surprise me either if that was the way it was supposed to look, although I'd sure like to hear the reason why it would be desired.

Not to distract the thread, but I have a related question. Here is my
desired behavior:

I want all of my artists to show up in the artists list, whether or not they
are compilation only.
However in the albums list, I want a compilation album to only show up once,
not once per artist.

I've found no combination of settings which produces this -- I seem to
remember that Slim Server used to behave this way, but changed at some point
along the line. Is there any way to achieve this behavior with the current
SS version?

Are you using 6.5.1? There were some significant changes made to compilation handling to fix sorting and pagebar issues in browse Albums.

I'm not seeing the situation that you're talking about... In browse Albums, albums never show up more than once. Even when "List compilation albums under each artist" is set, all my compilations are still sorted to the spot where "Various Artists" would appear alphabetically. That setting only appears to apply to browse Artists, causing all of the "one of" artists from compilations to be listed.

I am using 6.5.1

I should mention that I do not keep files grouped by album in my directory
structure, though -- I understand that this may make a difference. My
directory structure is:

root / artist / album / filename.flac

So if I have a compilation album, its files are spread across multiple
directories. From what I've read on here, this difference may explain why I
am not seeing my expected behavior when listing albums. But the strange
thing to me is that I don't think the software previously behaved this way,
in the 6.3 timeframe.

I see. Yes, you're probably right - this was a change made in SlimServer 6.5. What's happening is those albums aren't being recognized as the same album. Instead, SlimServer sees them as distinct albums for each artist (probably with only one or so tracks), not compilations. SlimServer 6.5 now requires all tracks for a compilation album to be located in the same folder. If I recall correctly, this was a side effect of being able to distinguish albums with the same name from one-another. From what I've seen in other discussions, I don't think there's a workaround short of reorganizing the storage of these compilation albums.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. Time to reorganize the library, I
suppose. I have no religious need to have it organized the way I do. I
think I had it this way so that I could drag and drop a folder into a music
player in order to play all of the music by a given artist. This was
probably before I had my music tagged consistently. With consistent
tagging, it's not necessary.

Thanks a lot for the responses -- very much appreciated.

If I navigate to "No Album", I am shown ALL artists for tracks with no album. This isn't a very intelligent side-effect. SlimServer should be able to treat No Album tracks differently (your database query shouldn't be having 'WHERE ALBUM = ""', which I suspect it does in this case, and then picks up artists for all tracks that don't have ALBUM set to anything; but should treat that as a special case).

Just a suggestion, as it IS a common case to have many tracks with no album info, but you don't want to see every one of their artists for the "No Album" 'album'.

It's not horrendous, but I think would indeed qualify as a bug.
I'll go vote on it.
