Would it ever be possible to stream ac3 5.1 sound over the squeezebox and output through the optical/coax? This would in effect enable me to have a wireless link to my 5.1 system without wires which would be fantastic as im getting into some 5.1 music (as in not just dvd, just streight music)

Sean and Dean have said this might be possible, but I don't think
we've seen any facility for it right now. I'd love to be able to put
AC3 files on the server and have them transferred to my Dolby Digital
decoder via the optical connection...

In a similar vein, I was just watching a DVD on my Mac laptop and
listening through the puny laptop speakers when I realized how cool it
would be to just stream the sound through my stereo. Is this possible
already and I don't know it?

You could use Nicecast to get the audio in a format that Slim would
understand but I don't think it would be 5.1...

Excellent! and thank you! Plain 'ol stereo is just fine for my
purposes. I was scouring the Internet trying to find something just
like this. Nicecast looks like the ticket, am downloading now.

Nicecast works exactly as advertised. Only problem with using it to
listen to a DVD is that the buffered audio stream lags the video
significantly. :-(
