Hi everybody,

Why is it so complicated everytime slimserver is upgraded ??

I first had problems with my albums, missing 600. Resolved by adding Music Folder path but finally with all my APPLE LOSLESS files correctly founded, there is no sound.

I just use SB3 for my audiophile system and only alac files from Itunes 7.

After having 6.5.1 installed, SB did the normal upgrade to 72 firmware version.

I don't use any plugins.

Please help, i just sold my cd player...

Ok. I did a fresh install of 6.5.1 and

1/ Scan is quick and reliable
2/ Radios works fluently (but lost all my favorites obviously)
3/ BUT none of my alac files gives Sound

Please help's needed

Anybody ??

I think there's problem with decoders, if i try to add one, it doent't work, something's missing. Does 6.5.1 works with ALAC ??

I'm stuck with radios right now

You've not said what OS you are using.

There have been some problems with ALAC decoders, I think. As a test you could try ripping or transcoding an album or two to FLAC or WAV and check that this is ok.

Also, when you try to play something, do you get an error, or does the SB look like it thinks its playing something?

try turning off your firewall on your server.

(When you upgrade software, the firewall will not know that it is the same program and will block it.)

Did you happen to check if the Server Settings|File Type default values changed during the upgrade?

damned006
2007-01-23, 13:21
As i said, just moved back to 6.5.0 and it works, only radios are a bit more difficult to get.

let me just say, as a SB3 lover, how "pain in the ass" is Slimserver. I just can't understand how the official release can't just work properly !! Is it really to much to ask ??

I'm very aware of all the good work being done around here by many people but none other 300 bucks product is so difficult to use properly.

I spent so many hours just try to figure out why i had X number of files in my hard drive and itunes but Y files with slimserver. When it's not the No Genre problem or the error radio problem and now the "no sound" problem.

You just have to try and try again different setup. How come ?

Sorry for the "Coup de geule" but it becomes a love hate feeling but more important it's so time consuming, sometimes i just want to use my cd player again and just get rid of the thing (and i just spent 2 months every night riping my entire cd collection).

Anyway, thanks for all the people trying to help around here, even if i still dont know why this fuc... 6.5.1 doesn't play alac files.

Yes i checked this. No change around here

Grr now i'm missing 15 artists and get 9 albums more. Why Why Why

It's the exact same settings used with 6.5.1 and the result is different. Crazy.Again

I have the EXACT same problem with 6.5.1. My Itunes collection is made up of 440GB of Apple Lossless files and no matter what I do, whether it be a fresh XP install or existing, the SB2 acts like it will play but no sound is made. 6.5 and lower work ok. I have disabled all firewalls that I have and anti-virus but no difference.

Today I upgraded from 6.2.1 to 6.5.1 and I'm having no problems playing my music. It's 90% ALAC and 10% AAC. Most of the ALAC was ripped with iTunes, some was ripped vinyl converted from WAV to ALAC with dBpowerAMP. I'm using XP SP2.

What processes do you see running when your music is "playing" an ALAC track? I have flac.exe and alac.exe.

Steve.

AudioFrog
2007-01-23, 17:29
The only processes I see doing anything is slim.exe, mysql and occasionally socketwrapper.exe, no flac.exe or alac.exe processes. The hard drive chatters for awhile after attempting to play a song.

I suggest you try setting some of the debug options and post anything significant that shows up. I'm not sure which ones you need but d_files, d_formats, d_paths, d_stream, d_server and anything else that looks interesting might be a start.

Steve.

Steve,

I turned on debugging for those modules. Where are the log files generated? I looked all thru the Program Files/Slimserver directories for them but I don't see any.

Thx,

Ed

If you look at the page with the debugging options, you'll see that the last word of the description ("here") is a link. Click and you'll see the log.

That's the output from d_paths. you'll want to look at d_source along with that. If that whole chunk is coming up in fast groups like that, there is likely a problem with the file types settings. If not, then it could be that part of the transcoding command in failing, which will show signs in d_source

AudioFrog

Selecting d_source shows some sort of 'unknown' error:

This is the problem. Unfortunately the transcoder has been lost to
slimserver somehow. As it's a launched process, there isn't a direct
way to see the problem in log output. However, if you stop the
server, you can run it manually from a command prompt and see what is
dumped from the transoders. open a command prompt:

start->program->accessories->command prompt

then run:

"c:\program files\slimserver\server\slim.exe"

try and play an ALAC song, and the failure should hopefully show a
message in the command prompt window.

Unfortunately when I attempt to run slim.exe from a CMD prompt, it just sits there with no text output in the command window. When I attempt to use the Slim Tray, the Icon just flashes as if it was trying to start but never does. When I break out of slim.exe with a CTRL-C, it returns something to the effect that it could not connect to the database. Using the Slim Tray normally to start slimserver, it starts just fine and all the playlists are there but no sound. Completely baffling. Are there any command line arguments to force slim.exe to display startup messages?

Thanks for your help,

Ed

Oops, maybe instead of trying to use the web interface to play a song for debugging sakes I was supposed to use the squeezebox via remote. I'll try that when I get home for lunch.

oreillymj

When you start slim.exe from a DOS prompt, you need to go back into the WEB UI and re-enable the d_source debugging option.

Then try play an ALAC file from an SB2/3

The debug info will appear in the console window.

BTW - Andy updated the Alac binary to fix a bug but only added it to 7.0a

If you wnat to try the binary, make a backup of alac.exe in
C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread

and replace it with the version from here

http://svn.slimdevices.com/*checkout*/trunk/server/Bin/MSWin32-x86-multi-thread/alac.exe?rev=11240

You can also start the server with the debugging options by typing:

"c:\program files\slimserver\server\slim.exe" --d_source --d_paths

you generally don't need to post more than that. it seems that the transcoders are no longer dumping any info, or arent the problem after all. There is an open bug report that seems to indicate a problem with command length in windows.

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4705

there is a log attached there too, which shows similar output. If you wish to keep tabs on the progress there, please sign up on bugs.slimdevices.com and add your email address to the cc list on that report.

I suppose you could try some experiments to shorten the total command length. One would be to create a small test music folder somewhat closer to the root of your disk. Another would be streaming as WAV which would avoid the flac command.

Thank you for all your help. Sorry this is an existing issue and that you had to re-diagnose the problem. This has been baffling me for awhile now and it appears that 7.0 has the same bug (I tried it before posting my issue then went back to 6.5.1). I will sign up for that bug tracker notification, go back to 6.5 and wait it out. I will try moving the itunes library closer to the drive root also.

Thanks again,

Ed

I moved my Itunes music folder right off of root of my C: drive, pointed to the new folder in Itunes, cleared and rescanned my library in Slimserver but the same problem occurs. It was worth the try anyway.

Have you tried streaming as WAV rather than FLAC?

How do I change from Flac to WAV? I poked around the 'File Types' menu but I wasn't sure what to change.

Thanks,

Clear the checkbox against:

Apple Lossless FLAC alac/flac

The checkbox against:

Apple Lossless WAV alac

should already be set, if it isn't then set it.

When it's running then check task manager - you should just see an alac process. No flac or mov123 processes.

Steve,

I set the file types as you described and the same problem occured. I also restarted the slimserver service but the same result. I uninstalled 6.5.1 and reinstalled 6.5.0 and all is well. It seems like 6.5.1 and later has some code change that breaks the operability, at least on my PC. Periodically I will test nightly builds to see if the problem goes away but for now I have to stick with 6.5.0. Thank you VERY much for all your help on this.

FWIW, on my Windows XP home system I was having problems streaming music files (but not radio) after I upgraded to 6.5.1. I updated my socketwrapper file with the one at the following location and everything worked again.

http://homepage.eircom.net/~altondsl/slim/socketwrapper_0.12_20060220.zip

The original file is located in:
C:\Program Files\Slimserver\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread\ I believe.

This file was mentioned as a fix for similar issues with the AlienBBC plugin which is what caused me to give it a try.

What firewall are you using? I read in a couple of threads that socketwrapper.exe sometimes has to be defined as a permitted application for some of them.

Oh, I've just read that you've already tried disabling your FW and AV software.

SUCCESS!!!!! Thank you!!!

The new socketwrapper.exe worked like a champ on both 6.5.1 and the latest build of 7.0! If I personally knew you guys, Chris and Steve, I would buy you a few rounds of beer!

Thanks again for all your help in cracking this issue. I learned tons about slimserver in the process and I hope this thread is of use to others experiencing this issue too.

Glad to hear it did the trick. I make sure I always have a copy of the modified socketwrapper on my backup drive, JIC. Frankly, I am not exactly sure what the socketwrapper does, but I certainly know what problems it can cause.

Out of curiousity, and perhaps to fine-tune where the issue lies, what firewall/antivirus are you using? I am using McAfee for both at the moment.

I actually switched from Symantec AV to MS Forefront beta but I disabled the AV during install and scan. I use the XP Firewall with the LinkSys wireless router firewall but I disabled both of those too during troubleshoot but it didn't make any difference.

Me again... I've been following every advices here but it became very complicated. I hope nobody took offense for my words.

I've just upgraded with nightly 6.5.1 but i still couldn't get my files played (with no error mentioned) so i tried the latest trick from ChrisNY. Very simple btw and it's a miracle, it works for me also !!

So i want to thank you A LOT for the help, thanks, thanks, thanks from Paris.
I also want to say i don't understand what i just done, what is this socketwrapper file ? Where did you get it ? Can you please tell me why the official slimserver released doesn't get this correct file ??

I mean if someone new just buy SB3, he's going to use 6.5.1, it's not like he has a choice and he won't be able to listen his music ! So he'll return the SB, it's too bad, don't you think ?

I know it's not the good forum but i want to tell you about the new linear power supply i just get for my SB3. The results is excellent and with a dac, this little box officially replace my ancient 2000 cd player (which is sold).

I *think* that socketwrapper allows command line communication with a socket.

I believe the problem with releasing the alternate socketwrapper.exe is that the author seems to have disappeared and SD don't have the source.

I was so happy it worked... but no sometimes i still don't have any sound from my alac files and the strangest things happens.
First, now, i have "problem can't open file for" and 2nd this file i try to play goes directly in a "no genre" folder ! It's SF as this "no genre" folder didn't exist right before i played the song !

Please help.

Sometimes i also get a windows error for this socketwrapper.exe file. I'm becoming mad.

Thanks

kdf,

did this alternate socketwrapper file work for the bug you posted?

it certainly seems that SD needs to rewrite theirs, if this ones code isn't available to them, and isn't full proof anyway.

i am curious as to what it does exactly, and why in 6.5 all was well, but in newer vers, it isn't. as i use mp3, not a grave concern for me, but i found this thread interesting.

A change was made to resolve bug 4318 which means that socketwrapper is now always used when transcoding formats. Prior to this it was only used for some radio formats. Unfortunately this appears to have triggered the problem that socketwrapper does not work with some security software.

I suggest people with this problem post to this bug so an alternative fix can be considered.

Re the alternaive socketwrapper. Unfortunately no one has the source code other than Ian who is no longer contactable. I remember some details of what Ian was trying, so but it will need experimentation to try to recreate by someone with the problem.

I was having a very similar problem after upgrading from 6.3.1. to 6.5.1 - everything looked like it was working, including a lot of blinking lights on my router and switch, but no sound. Tried the socketwrapper fix and we're back in business. Thanks ChrisNY!
