I just noticed Fred has committed Squeezebox Firmware 72 and Transporter
firmware 27 to both trunk and the 6.5.x branch.

Main change:

"Gapless MP3 playback for files encoded with LAME. Please do a complete
wipe and rescan of your library to enable this."

Really? I thought the gapless support was supposed to have been
included back in October? I did try it once, and it was better, but I
could still hear a discontinuity on some live albums, but have not had
time yet to dig further.

You're right, it did go in in October, ~firmware rev. 65.

My mistake - I mis-interpreted the changelog changes.

It seems this fw is for some hush-hush new Squeezenetwork feature, which
has yet to be announced.

I'm constantly amazed about how many people have a problem with leaving their computer on 24/7.

If I understand correctly (always doubtful) the only benefit of the mp3tunes service is it allows you to listen to your music (in compressed format) if your home music server is inaccessible (via the Internet or locally).

Another benefit for lossless users is offsite backup I guess.

Of if you're invited to a friend's party and want to bring your collection
without shutting down your homeserver. Or share your slimserver with
friends and relatives without worrying about your bandwidth at home.

That's another big plus (IMHO).

Oh, and there's also the fact that you have all of your music backed up without the hassle of continually burning DVD's or copying Gig's to a 2nd hard disk. So if you schedule the client to synch every night then you're unlikely to lose very much should your music HD pack up.

I love the idea of taking my SB to a party, switching it on and playing music. If the feature is implemented within Squeezenetwork so tht you can upload playlists and have them automagically re-pointed to songs on MP3Tunes, that would make this even better.

It's obvious to anyone who socializes with other people than computer nerds.

Both are great benefits, and I say this as a computer nerd who's been
running a Linux server full time since 1993... ;)

I'm just afraid transferring a 100GB over a 1Mbit uplink will take
rather long.

1Mbit? I must be dreaming... still stuck at 500kb :-(. Would have to do
this from the office (3Mb).

Does anyone actually have some experience with mp3tunes?
