View Full Version : Shortcuts in my Music Folder

I apologize for asking such a silly question, but I can't, for the life of me, get this to work and I've look for an hour or so. Probably just missed it.

I see that SlimServer supports Windows shortcuts in the Music Folder, but for the life of me I can't get it to work.

The only way I can seem to get SlimServer to scan songs is to put a directory that actually has music files in it. Any attempt to add shortcut results in no effect. I tried a folder with just shortcuts in it: I get no music files scanned. I tried a shortcut in a directory with music files in it: I just get the music files that (including subdirectories but not shortcuts).

I think I'm creating the shortcuts correctly, and I'm doing full rescan after each attempt, but no luck. I'm using 6.5.0.

Thanks!

You should tell us where your files are stored: are they locally or on a
network share (NAS, fileserver)?

Yes, that might help :)

These are all files local to the Windows maching running SlimServer. Specifically, I have two locations that I want to add to SlimServer:

C:\Documents and Settings\olmsu1e9\My Documents\My Music\Lots o songs
C:\Documents and Settings\olmsu1e9\My Documents\My Music\Music

(ignore the silly names, these directories are temporary)

I tried creating an entirely separate folder with shortcuts to these two, but no luck.

Also, it might help to note that these directories contain very few subdirectories. Most of the songs are in the 'root' of these directories.

Go to c:\.....\My Music
right click on the folder for "Music"; select "create shortcut".
Repeat for the other folder.

Create a directory c:\library

Drag the shortcuts you created into c:\library

Point Slimserver at c:\library

Scan

This should work!!

What happens if you point SlimServer to
C:\Documents and Settings\olmsu1e9\My Documents\My Music\ ?

Open a cmd window and run the scanner from the command line using
"scanner.exe --wipe -d_info -d_scan" from the SlimServer folder.

If you're not familiar with DOS you might give the scanner GUI a try:

I get all the files in both directories, and a number of files from other directories under My Music that I don't want.

Open a cmd window and run the scanner from the command line using
"scanner.exe --wipe -d_info -d_scan" from the SlimServer folder.

When I point SS to c:\library with the shortcuts, I get a the files added. Weird. Turning off the debug flags, it adds 1323 files, which is correct.

Going back to the web interface and running a wipe and rescan, it goes back to zero.

Very odd.

The only thing I can think of is that I do get the following output when I run scan (without the debug flags). Note that the files are all added when run via the command line, but not when run in the web interface.

C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server>scanner.exe --wipe

Hmmm... permissions: what user is the service running as? Does it have
access rights to the folder you mention? As it's stored in the user's
profile, permissions might be restricted. When run from the command line
it has your rights.
