Would it be possible to allow the option of re-scanning the library on launching the server?
Currently the server can be re-scanned after a period of time of adding to the itunes library or never, in effect manually.
Re-scanning after a period does not suit me as I may be burning disks or doing other processor intensive tasks and I don't wish the processor to taken up with re-scanning. I therefore use the manual option which I am prone to forget to do.
It would be much better if the server could check if there is new music and if there is new music re-scan this music in as it is launched.

You could make this happen for yourself by writing a simple (two line) script that first runs the scanner and then starts slimserver. I find that running the scanner standalone is very quick - for example I have it built in to my ripping scripts and it only takes about 30 sec to check for new CDs and then add the one I've just ripped.

Or use the Scheduled scan option.

I would vote against this.

Slimserver has in the past rescanned the music library at start up (not sure if it was intentional or a bug), and many people, including me, lobbied to get this functionality removed.

Slimserver runs as an automatic service on my box, so it runs when XP starts up. This causes disk thrashing and slows the startup/log in cycle. Most of the time I know when I need to update my library, and prefer to do it manually when I am not using the PC for other activities.

There is a rescan plugin, that can be configured to run a scheduled rescan - e.g. run it every morning.

Someone also wrote a windows shell registry patch that allows a right-click on a folder to rescan just that folder. So, after adding new music, you can rescan the folder at that time. It may also be possible to configure some post-rip action in your ripping software to automatically rescan slimserver upon adding new music?

I guess there's nothing wrong with requesting an auto-rescan upon server startup, but I would opt for it to be optional, with the default setting being turned off.

I agree with Phil - if needed then make it optional.

Thanks for the replies.

As I said I would like it to be an option not a compulsion.

There is a 3rd party plugin available to scan at PRE-SET TIMES. I use this to rescan everything at 3AM. Solves all issues, expecially if I had spent the evening ripping new tunes.

It works great!!

I installed Slimsever a few days ago and have an integration with iTunes.

After having done changes in iTunes I wanted the updates immediately, so I requested a manual rescan, using the option "look for any changes".

First of all, while the re-scan was in progress all my iTunes playlists were deleted, and then later rebuilt.

Secondly, it took several hours to complete (I have approx 36.000 songs in my library).

Is this normal, and is there a faster way to update the SS libtary after changes in iTunes ?
