so based on what you are saying, I should just use iTunes on OS X to
manage my music, since this will be less stress on the hard drive
because it would just use the library.xml file instead of a full rescan
everytime the server is started. Am I interpreting that correctly?

Hi Mike,

I'm really sorry to hear about your data loss. I can't imagine,
though, how the SlimServer could be responsible, except that your hard
drive was on the verge of failure and some moderate use put it over the
edge.

I do recommend using the iTunes integration, but for performance
(faster scanning) and feaures (access to iTunes playlists, etc..)

If reading your MP3 files is causing hard disk errors, then there's
definitely something suspect with the hardware and I'd see about
replacing it as soon as possible.
