I now have slimserver v6.5 working fine on my linkstation but it is very slow and so the nokia 770 theme is pretty much unuseable which is a shame because i can see it could be amazing.

This makes me wonder if i could buy a highish end pc to run slimserver on and either keep the tracks on the linkstation or move them onto the pc.

I need a quiet pc that could fit behind a couch so fairly small as well. Oh and fairly cheap to boot.

Any suggestions?

About twenty brazillion times better than a linkstation :) The CPU and
RAM differences alone will be most impressive.

And on the noise front?

The mini has a small fan, but the system is generally pretty quiet.

If You want a silent PC You can search for a HP/Compaq e-pc D510, it's small (but upgradeable with a large HD). On e-bay You can find for a little money.

I take it your Squeezebox is wired, and this is why the server needs to fit behind the couch? If you can move the server to another room, so that size and noise aren't as critical, your options are increased many times. It's pretty easy to find an inexpensive machine that can run SlimServer with the processing power it needs.

No the squeezebox is wireless but i live in a flat and don't have an empty / spare room at the moment, so it has to stay in the lounge.

While not perfectly silent, a mac mini is the quietest computer I've ever used with moving parts.
