Hi

I was running 6.5 with no problems..
Revently, when I went to start SlimServer it just said Starting Slim Server for a while. I figured since I have about 500 albums, it was just reindexing. I looked in processes and saw mysqld and let it run

I returned home five hours later..Starting SLimServer still

I went on the forums and uninstalled and reinstalled...6.5 no help

I pointed it to a direvtory with just a few songs...SLim Server starts and looks like it is up and running. When it launches localhost:9000 I get a "Page Not Found"

I checked the WIndows firewall and posrt 900 for slimserver is listed as an exception.

I installed 6.5.1 as a post suggested..same thing

I checked the services.msc and SlimServer is in there...I try to start it manually and it gives the following pop up message:

"The SLim Server Service on Local Computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do..."

In the event viewer, there are no Slim Server messages, only thins MySQL one:

"Can't open and lock time zone table: Table 'mysql.time_zone_leap_second' doesn't exist trying to live without them"

My IP address for this computer did change, but I am assuming that only affects my squeezebox

I'm having a big party tomorrow and wanted to show off my Squeezebox and not worry about playing DJ...

Thanks in advance for the help

Dave

Hi all.

Same problem. I've been a long time Slim2 user and love it. Purchased a Slim 3 wireless and got through the wireless setup issues (seperate story). Once I got the device connected and working, It was losing connection with SlimServer. Invetigation reveled that the slimserver service is crashing/stopping unexpectedly. Restarting results in the service reverting back to a stopped state ("The SlimServer service terminated unexpectedly.") This is both 6.5.0 and 6.5_v2006-12-02. Multiple uninstalls and reinstalls has not helped.

With the service dead, no connectivity to port 9000. Basically I'm dead in the water since I can't get the SlimServer service to run. My next step is to try and revert back to an earlier version that I still have saved.

I am not an expert in the inner workings of SS, but can offer some general computer psychology things to try, if you haven't already:
1. Reboot your network appliances
2. Start windows in safe mode to minimize conflicts from other services.
3. Shut down all processes that will stop using Task manager (except Explorer), then stop/start SS service manually.
4. Chkdsk for disk problems.
5. Scan for memory problems/hard drive problems which could be corrupting SS code. I use Tufftest.
6. If the SB can find slimserver on SB startup then there's no IP issue.
7. Type the error message into Google. 1/10 times I get a good clue.
That's all my tricks. Sorry if it doesn't help. Good luck!
Rich

This is Windows? It's running as a service? your music is on a NAS?
Try giving the service your account to run as (this is done by Start >
Run > services.msc, right-click the service, Properties > Log on).

Another high-likelihood problem is that you've got old plugins. Delete
them, and then start again.

Beyond that, my ESP fails :) A good general tip is to run it from a
command prompt (Start > Run > cmd) or Terminal ( Applications >
Utilities > Terminal). Change directories to the place where
Slimserver installed, then run the program -- it will spit out a bunch
of text, and the end out that output will probably explain why it
died.

I have been running slimserver with softsqueeze for a couple of weeks without issue. Last night, softsqueeze kept stopping , losing connection to slimserver. Slimserver kept stopping shortly after it started. I uninstalled and reinstalled slimserver. Now slimserver tries to start and will not get running just sits in the "slimserver starting mode"

This is very frustrating to say the least.

Stinkingpig can you walk us through your suggested steps. I got to the Logon screen you mention but what do I do then ??

Also the old plugins you mention, where/how does one check and remove these ??

I really appreciate any help.

Do realize that what I was posting was the fix to a complete guess
about what the problem is... no one has even confirmed what OS we're
talking about. But anyway, you type in your username and password. Put
them in the appropriate fields. Click OK. Restart the service.

I'm not sure on Windows, but I think it's C:\Program
Files\Slimserver\Plugins. You're looking for things like AlienBBC,
Last.FM, Slimscrobbler, SuperDateTime...

The most useful thing to do is the last thing I posted. Make it crash
from a command prompt, then post the output.

Stinkingpig,

I am running Windows XP Sevice pack2.I went to the command prompt as recommended and tried to start the server. The following error message was returned:

"2006-12-03 20:18:38.4687 can't setup the listening port 9000 for the HTTP server: Unknown error at /PerlApp/Slim/Web/HTTP.pm line 167 "

Any ideas ??

Also I do not believe I have any plugins installed I am not awage of installing any slimserver plugins if that is what you mean.

Thanks again for any help or ideas you or anyone may have on what to do next.

Possible clash of app on port 9000.

To confirm try adding the option "--httpport 9080" on the command line to use port 9080 when starting from command prompt.

I changed the command to " slim.exe--httpport 9080"
This was not a recognizeable command.

I tried " slim.exe httpport 9080 " and this yielded the same error code as before.

I do not think I am entering the command properly. How should it be entered?

Thanks

The command should be

slim.exe --httpport 9080

There are two "-" before "httpport" and a space between "slim.exe" and the "--"

At the command prompt I entered the start up command as described and got the following two messages:

"About to look for files in C:\programfiles\slimserver\server\playlists "

and then this:

"For files with extensions in: [(?i-xsm:\.<?:asf:wax:asx:lnk:wpl:m3ui:pls:xspf:cue:lnk)$l"

That was it. The server did not start up and and these symbols mean nothing to me.
Does anyone have any idea where to go from here?

Thanks all

It looks like it got further as there is a port clash perhaps with WMP 11.

To get more info about the problem, running slim from the command line add the following options and then copy the output into a file, zip it and attach to a post

slim.exe --d_plugins --d_startup --d_server --httpport 9080

Thanks bpa for your help thus far, since I am lost when it comes to this stuff. Let me know if I am wasting your time with this but I need a little help to get the info you request. I entered the command you asked for and got a pile of data.

I do not know how to copy the output to a file ?

I can't highlight and copy the info in the dos screen like in windows. Does it get copied into notepad or something

C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server>slim.exe --d_plugins --d_startup
--d_server --httpport 9080

you missed the space between httpport and 9080.

Thanks to all who commented on this problem when I requested assisstance. I am sorry if I highjacked the thread that I didn't start.
Today I tried to start from the command prompt again to correct the error I made in the command line that Stinkingpig pointed out. Well when I tried it today, I could not get any response beyond " slim.exe not a valid command". So at this point I said the hell with it and uninstalled the program ( I tried this a couple of times before I ever posted my problem here), then reinstalled and it seems to work perfectly again. The only difference I made this time was I also uninstalled the Java program necessary to run softsqueeze before I reinstalled slimserver. Not sure if this had any effect ??

I have no idea what the problem was or why it works now, go figure. I sure wish I was more computer literate ie.had a better understanding of how the program works and how the port communication works because as soon as it acts I guy like me is lost. I will continue to test with softsqueeze for a while before buying the squeezebox because I am not yet convinced it will be stable/reliable enough.

Thanks again
