View Full Version : Slim Running as Odd User

I suspect this is an easy one. I've finally gotten a version of slimserver to run "off the shelf" (6.5.1), however, it won't play music. It's giving me a permissions error. The music files are owned by slimserver:slimserver as is slimserver.pl. But, ps -ef | grep slim shows the processes running as user 501. How do I fix this?

What does "grep :501: /etc/passwd" show?

ps doesn't show "slimserver" for me since it is longer than 8 characters, it shows the numeric id instead.

slimserver:x:501:501:SlimServer:/usr/local/slimserver:/bin/bash

So, I guess that's not my problem?

Nope, it's a "feature" of ps.

Is every component of the path readable by slimserver?

Ie, if your music is in /mnt/external/music, make sure that /mnt and /mnt/external have the global x and r bits set:

chmod o+rx /mnt
chmod o+rx /mnt/external
chmod o+rx /mnt/external/music

(/mnt and /mnt/external may be owned by root, which is fine and probably correct ... you don't want to change that, but you will need to make sure they are readable by non-root users so that things below them in the directory tree will be available.)

[root@tibeaux slimserver]# ls -l /...
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Apr 26 2006 media

[root@tibeaux slimserver]# ls -l /media...drwxr-xr-x 9 root root 4096 Oct 4 22:33 mass

[root@tibeaux slimserver]# ls -l /media/mass...drw-rw-rw- 264 slimserver slimserver 8192 Oct 14 18:18 music

So it looks like that's not the problem. I appreciate your help, any other ideas?

That's the errant directory. You want the 'x' bit sit.

chmod u+x /media/mass/music

You will also want all directories below that to have the x bit set.

Perfect!

chmod u+x /media/mass/music
chmod -R u+x /media/mass/music

made it play. Thanks so much! Now, to figure out why my images aren't showing...
