...when an utterly unchanged configuration, for no reason, stops working. nothing has changed. the slimplayer now can't connect to the server, dammit. it's worked flawlessly for months on end, and NOTHING was changed.

well, not to be sarcastic, but something must have changed... just not necessarily with your knowledge.

Did you get a Windows update or an update to your firewall or antivirus software?

Is the server still running? Does it have logs?

Odds are something other than Slimserver itself updated, the trick is figuring out what it was and then smacking it.

This is the sort of sentence one generally has to eat later.

basic/original functionality that worked in version 5 and 6 now doesn't work in 6.5 nor 6.5.1

would you like to borrow a nut cracker :-)

Well before you guys throw your hands up in the air, have you let the forum take a crack at your issues? Checking your past posts, it doesn't appear so...

What MAC address does the SB report? Does it match the MAC printed on the bottom? Do you use DHCP? Have you tried a static IP address?

And where does it stop, does it connect to the router then not to SlimServer, or does it not connect to the router at all?

What specifically?

For some. For the (largely silent) many like myself, 6.5.1 works like a charm.

/me checks crystal ball...

you have wireless.
you live in an apartment building, or somehow close to other people's
homes and/or places of work
one of your neighbors just bought a wireless router, cordless phone,
or microwave oven
you'll meet a tall dark stranger with a long love line tomorrow

It works in windows media player.
It used to work in version 5.?? and version 6.0

Doesn't work in windows media player for me. Works if I use
mms://69.43.137.40/jazztrax061119h1.wma

But that takes a really long time to start so you may need to increase your radio connection time.

Got this in Windows Media Player:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. A network firewall might be preventing the Player from opening the file by using the UDP transport protocol. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:")."

Foobar wouldn't do it either but message more obscure.

I dropped the u from mmsu...
and increase the radio timeout time from 5 to 15.
Still no luck.

I'm not concerned what WMP tells everyone else, I've able to use it on MWP

Have you tried disabling the built-in WMA option in file types?

While slimserver does now handle wma natively, it supports http
streaming only, not mms streaming.

in fact, your url example is listed as one of the known mms-only
streams that are part of bug 3383.

well mostly, except for the horrible browsing artwork bug.

i couldn't get the link to work in WMP either, i would like to know why. i have WMP 11 and i would think any mms stream only station would want their stream to work with all WMPs.

and is the problem in listening to this link in that it just won't play at all on SS, or that it plays badly? stutters and so on?

I did some testing, including a crappy attempt to make the stream play through mplayer instead of wmadec (which doesn't exist on my linux server)

What I get is no connection to the stream at all, either with the built-in wma support, or my convert.conf change..

if anyone can tell me if I'm missing something:
wma flc * *
[mplayer] -really-quiet -vc null -vo null -cache 64 -af volume=0,resample=44100:0:1,channels=2 -ao pcm:nowaveheader:file=/dev/fd/4 $FILE$ 4>&1 1>/dev/null | [flac] -cs --totally-silent --endian=little --channels=2 --sign=signed --bps=16 --sample-rate=44100 --compression-level-0 -

mmsu:// url's seem to be MMS over UDP...

I don't know if that's doable on Linux or not, and I can imagine that a lot of firewalls would be upset about it.

The mms URL plays fine with standalone mplayer on Linux and it uses TCP. It doesn't play in SS because SS triesd to access the IP address port 80 (i.e. HTTP) to check for validity whereas mms needs only have port 1755 - this address has no port 80 and so SS refuses to play. See log below.

This was a problem in 6.2.x, was reported and fixed in 6.3.1 but seems to have reverted back in 6.5. This problem has shown up with a number of URL for example the UK's TalkSport.

bpa,

ur smart! :)

did you reopen that bug or notify SD? probably something that should be officially submitted by someone who knows what they are talking about.

any idea why it won't play for me on WMP 11?

bpa

As kdf already noted - it is already an open bug #3383.

I'm not concerned about the bug but any user who wants it fixed should vote for it.

In 6.2 there was a workaround by adding ":1755" at the end of the ip address but this no longer works in 6.5.

my oversight...

btw, i tried:

mms://69.43.137.40:1755/jazztrax061119h1.wma

in wmp 11 but it still doesn't work.

i understand why SS rejects it, i can't understand why wmp does.

..the ones who need to eat their words are those who claimed something had changed.

no upgrades - because i implement strict revision control. i need to approve upgrades.

i live in a house, my neighbors wireless networks never have affected mine, and their microwaves don't have the reach.

what i had to do was simply configure the squeezebox again - a few times over. then it worked, and it's worked since.

purely a squeezebox hangup.
