View Full Version : Is it possible to modify "Now Playing" display on Slimserver?

I modify practically all my filenames and choose the SB "file.ext" Title Format while playing a track so that I have all the information I need from a track; however, the Slimserver "Now Playing" display adds "from (CD title)" information that I don't need. Is there a way to eliminate this extra information so that the display is exactly like the one on the SB?

look in player settings for the Title Format settings there. This is
similar to the web preference, but operates on the player display.

I'm interested to know why you so this. Is it because you use wavs which don't support tags (which doesn't look to be the case judging by your signature)? Otherwise why not tag the files correctly and then use either the default Slimserver display stuff or install Michael Herger's excellent MusicInfo plugin to expand your display options?

I'm interested to know why you so this.
Since most of my music is classical, which has its own tagging problems, my personal solution includes manual tagging (mostly on the excellent Mp3tag program and sometimes directly on Windows Explorer) of the exact information I want the SB to display: Composer, Work, Orchestra, Conductor/Soloist, Track Number and Track Title. The most direct way to do this is by choosing "file.ext". I don't need ".flac" to show, but that is the best option Slimserver gives me at this time. With jazz and pop music I don't have to work as much.

I have tried all combinations on Server Settings --> Formatting and Slimserver almost always adds the extra "from xxxx" information, even when option 8 is "TRACKNUM. TITLE from ALBUM by ARTIST". This looks like a bug, because my SB only shows "FILE.EXT" (as it should).

KDF - whatever words of wisdom you just wrote were lost for forum readers...

Vdorta - not sure if this is your problem but have you disabled "Show Artist With Albums" (Server Settings- Formatting) ?

Also, you can do much better than just stuffing all that info in the file name, if that's what you are doing. Use a combination of erland's CustomScan plugin (to read the tags that Slimserver doesn't normally, like WORK) and Michael's MusicInfoScr plugin to lay it out just how you want on the screen...

ceejay, enabling or disabling "Show Artist with Albums" makes no difference. Thanks, I will try the plugins you recommend and report back.

lets try this again...

I may have read this wrong in the first place. The OP wants to have
File.ext displayed in the web interface.
At this time, it isn't designed to work this way as it is much
preferred to use tagging.

The web interface automatically includes links to the album and artist
when the titleformat doesn't already
include ARTIST and/or ALBUM. File.ext would not include these,
therefore the skins will have those extra links.
However, the artist and album links should only appear IF an album and
artist is defined. If you want these removed, perhaps get rid of the
artist/album tags that you don't need and also get rid of the GuessTags
formats so that the server doesn't try to use the filename to create
tags (unless you can create a GuessTags format that matches your
filenaming and creates useful tagging for you)

Then why is there a "file.ext" display option on Slimserver and why it doesn't work as the one in the player?

To get what you want, edit HTML/Default/status_header.html

simply remove the following:

[% IF itemobj.album.title && itemobj.album.title != noAlbum && includeAlbum %]

<span class="exnotactivenowplaying">[% "FROM" | string %] </span>

<span class="exnowplaying"><a [% albumHRef %] target="browser">[% itemobj.album.title | html %]</a></span>

[% END %]

[% IF itemobj.artist && itemobj.artist != noArtist && includeArtist %]
<span class="exnowplaying">[% PROCESS artistsAsHTML.html %]</span>
[% END %]

As for why they are different, they support different features. player ui has no use for hyperlinks whereas web ui does. Consider it oversight if you want (as I'm sure some will) or consider that there are just too many options for slimserver's own good.

If you would like to see the design changed, feel free to file an enhancement request at bugs.slimdevices.com

kdf, that is very nice of you. However, my knowledge of programming is practically zero and I guess I have to access Slimserver's source code. How do I do that?

they are just text files, and I already gave you the location in the
previous post.

HTML\Default\status_header.html

is relative to where you installed slimserver. On windows, by default
this is c:\program files\slimserver\server

just open with wordpad, find and remove the section I noted before,
then save. Granted, this can end up overwritten on your next upgrade,
but filing an enhancement only requires going to bugs.slimdevices.com,
signing up and filling out the form.

Thanks, I did it.
