View Full Version : Playlist for Slor Car racing (Scalextric)

2006-11-15, 01:09
I was wondering if anyone could help me with a playlist for slot-car racing? I'm drawing as bit of a blank. There are a few tunes I can hum but do not know any words, the artists or the name of the tune. I'd be very appreciative of any suggestions.
It's for a village tournament I've arranged this weekend. As I have a photo handy at this moment, here's where it'll be:

Not very hummable but right topic
The Race - Yello (video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCtiJWsk0Ro)

#1 choice: Radar Love by Golden Earring. "Last car to pass, here I go!"

Other options:

Lowrider by ZZ Top

Detroit Rock City by Kiss (complete with car wreck sound at the end)

Mustang Sally by whichever version you prefer. (best known version by Wilson Pickett, well recorded by The Committments, and my personal fav, a rocking version by Buddy Guy)

This is great! Thanks.
I've also just found the one that's really been bugging me. The theme music for the old BBC Grande Prix or Formula One racing. It's Fleetwood Mac's The Chain from the Rumors album.
This is going to be a great playlist.

With tongue in cheek I suggest:
Queen - I 'm in love with my car
Beatles - Drive my car

2006-11-15, 02:41
Thought of a couple more:

Stroker's Theme by Charlie Daniels Band ("Stroker Ace was born to race, had a mean streak 10 feet wide...")

Route 66 - first recorded by Nat King Cole, but covers by everyone from the Stones to Depeche Mode to Manhattan Transfer

I can't drive 55 - Sammy Hagar

2006-11-15, 02:50
ooh ooh!

Jerry Was a Race Car Driver by Primus

I think that about taps me out...

2006-11-15, 02:51
Pull up to the Bumper - Grace Jones
Greased Lightning - from Grease musical/film

On the theme but not good driving music.
Cars - Gary Neuman
Cars are Cars - Paul Simon
Road to nowhere - talking heads

2006-11-15, 03:10
Sorry, I can't help myself...

They call me the Breeze (I keep blowin down the road) - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Finish Line - Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush

2006-11-15, 03:27
Motor City - A Company of Strangers - Aussie outfit so you may not have it in your local record store, but when you get it, turn it up, and gun the throttle........There's not a like lot it that's not well known.

Whooo... thanks to you all for this.
So far I have managed to set this playlist up. The only one I'm a bit dubious about is the Cars song Drive... it think it might more likely to send me to sleep rather than encourage me to drive faster. Can't believe I did not think of Radar Love or that no-one mentioned Highway Star!

Racing Playlist:

1. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
2. Kiss - Detroit Rock City
3. Yello - The Race
4. Golden Earing - Radar Love
5. Route 66 - The Rolling Stones
6. The Cars - Drive
7. Grace Jones - Pull up to the Bumper
8. Gary Numan - Cars
9. The Beatles - Drive my Car
10. Talking Heads - Road to Nowhere
11. Canned Heat - On the Road Again
12. Steppen Wolf - Born to Be Wild
13. Ray Charles - Hit the Road Jack
14. Cream - Crossroads
15. The Eagles - Life in the Fast Lane
16. C.W. McCall - Convoy
17. The Beach Boys - Fun, Fun, Fun
18. Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers - Roadrunner
19. Deep Purple - Highway Star
20. Allman Brothers - Midnight Rider
21. The Doors - Riders on the Storm

Not driving related subject but likely to make me drive faster (better?):

Boston - Eye of the Tiger
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
M.A.R.R.S - Pump up the Volume
Orbital - Satan
Snap - The Power
The Doors - L.A. Woman
The Beatles - Back in the USSR
ZZ Top - Legs

Arriving soon:

Charlie Daniels Band - Stroker's Theme
Primus - Jerry Was a Race Car Driver

Cake - The Distance from Fashion Nugget

Paul Oakenfold - Speed

Not related to driving, but would make you drive fast:

If it's going to be an MA audience, Korn - Y'all Want a Single

Cassius - Cassius 99

When I was a teenager, a friend of mine insisted that Led Zeppelin - Rock and Roll from Led Zeppelin IV was the ultimate driving music. 20 years later, Cadillac used it in a series of commercials.

How about "Hot Rod Lincoln".

I think the most well known cover of this song was by, "Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen".

My pappy said, 'Son, you're gonna drive me t' drinkin' ...
If you don't quit drivin' that - Hot ... Rod ... Lincoln!'

Well, you've heard the story of the hot rod race,
When the Ford and the Mercury were settin' the pace.
That story's true I'm here to say,
Cause I was a'drivin' that Model A.

It's got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up;
That Model A body makes it look like a pup.
It's got 12 cylinders and uses them all;
And an overdrive that just won't stall.

It's got a 4-barrel carb and dual exhausts,
4:11 gears that really get lost -
Safety tubes and I'm not scared,
The brakes are good and the tires are fair.

We left San Pedro late one night;
The moon and the stars were shinin' bright.
We were drivin' up Grapevine Hill,
Passin' cars like they were standin' still.

Then, all of a sudden, in the wink of an eye,
a Cadillac sedan passed us by.
The remark was made, "That's the car for me."
But, by then, the taillights wuz all you could see.

Well, the fellers ribbed me for bein' behind,
So I started to make that Lincoln unwind.
Took my foot off the gas and, man alive,
I shoved it down into overdrive.

Well, I wound it up to 110;
Twisted the speedometer cable right off the end.
Had my foot glued right to the floor;
I said, "That's all there is - there ain't no more."

Now the fellas thought I'd lost all sense;
The telephone poles looked like a picket fence.
They said, "Slow down, I see spots."
The lines on the road just looked like dots.

Went around a corner and passed a truck;
I crossed my fingers just for luck -
The fenders clickin' the guard rail post;
The guy beside me was white as a ghost.

Smoke was rollin' outta the back
When I started to gain on that Cadillac
I knew I could catch him and hoped I could pass
But when I did I'd be short on gas.

There were flames comin' from out of the side;
You could feel the tension; man, what a ride.
I said, "Look out, boys, I've got a license to fly"
And the Cadillac pulled over and let me by.

All of a sudden a rod started knockin';
Down in the depths she started a rockin'.
I looked in the mirror and a red light was blinkin';
The cops was after my Hot Rod Lincoln.

Well they arrested me and put me in jail.
I called my pop to make my bail.
He said, "Son, you're gonna drive me t' drinkin',
If you don't quit drivin' that - Hot ... Rod ... Lincoln!"

I've got to put a vote in for 'Ace of Spades' by Motorhead. It's not strictly a driving song but it transmutes my right foot to lead everytime I hear it in the car.

Presumably you will be playing these on your guitar (through the Laney) whilst standing the middle of the track?

I have an MP3 of a 1953 BRM V16 which I downloaded from the web - it's a bit of fun as you can hear the thing poping and banging round the circuit and then clipping the mic as it comes down the pit straight. If you want it and can't find it on google, email me and I'll upload it somewhere (it's 3MB)

especially the "lowly lowly" part when you pass someone :-)

You better listen again using your Transporter. He's saying lonely ;-)

Aha. Blame it on that friend - he always said it was "lowly" and I've always assumed that's what it was.

I often have a hard time deciphering lyrics when others have no problem, so I'm sure you're right.

Is your event this weekend? I am looking forward to seeing what the finished list looks like as well as any impressions your guests have of the music and the SB!

Sounds like it will be a kick.

Again, thanks for the help with this
The event was yesterday afternoon. It went very well and adrenalin levels were extremely high. We had six racing at one time quite often and high lap speeds were achieved (before drunkeness set in).
The music went down very well indeed although some comments were raised about the inclusion of McCall's Convoy (yes, I was dubious about that one too). I could only use what music I already had or what I could easily obtain in the time I had, so many suggestions did not make it onto the list.
All the players had already been to my house on previous occasions so have experienced my system. All have been impressed, however, the nearness of the Scalextrix set to a set of loud OB1s did bring an immersive nature to the event. :-)

I don't know if anyone else uses Scalextric but the type I have is Scalextric Digital, which includes lane changers activated from the individual hand held controllers which means up to six cars can be raced on two tracks (and overtake each other... yer see). In addition there is an un-documented Aux out socket on the power box which some guys have hacked, made up a lead for and designed some software. The software shows laps times, averages, photos of driver and cars, adds sound and does lots of other things too. There is a new version along soon which promises a lot more (sounds in sync with aceleration/deceleration, the ability to program in fuel levels possibly etc). Anyway, it's all top fun.

Oh, yes... kids love it too.

Here's the final playlist (needless to say it was on shuffle and repeat). A few tracks are not driving themed but were added for their adrenalin quotient:

1. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
2. Canned Heat - On The Road Again
3. The Beatles - Drive My Car
4. Kiss - Detroit Rock City
5. Golden Earring - Radar Love
6. Deep Purple - Highway Star
7. Yello - The Race
8. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
9. The Rolling Stones - Route 66
10. Bachman Turner Overdrive - You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet
11. Grace Jones - Pull Up To The Bumper
12. Gary Numan - Cars
13. M.A.R.R.S - Pump Up the Volume
14. Motörhead - Ace Of Spades
15. The Eagles - Life in the Fast Lane
16. Talking Heads - Road To Nowhere
17. Snap - The Power
18. Steppenwolf - Born To Be Wild

I think it looks like race meetings will become a regular thing (as long as someone else buys the beer next time) so I've added Jessica (I didn't realise that this song was about driving but I like it so who cares) but don't like most of Queen's output barring the first album and have nothing by Bob Newhart (I've never heard of him even though he's probably famous).

2006-11-19, 14:32
It doesn't work so well in text (you really need to have heard it) but here it is...

2006-11-19, 19:01
Since you are still adding to the list and since you have some ZZ Top already, how about adding "She Loves My Automobile"?

She don' love me, she love my automobile
She don' love me, she love my automobile
Well she would do anything just to slide behind the wheel

She don' care if I'm stoned or sloppy drunk
She don' care if I'm stoned or sloppy drunk
Long as she got the keys and there's a spare wheel in the trunk

I remember watching Bob Newhart as a kid on TV. He is one of the kings of dry delivered punch lines.

The best tune for racing has gotta be Fleetwood Mac - The Chain!

I wish they'd bring that back as the F1 theme, it was awesome!!

"Hi, I'm Larry, this is brother Darryl, and this is my other brother Darryl......"
