Help Ssods Ds-106

Hi

I am struggling to install SS on my DS-106.

I have downloaded "SlimServer_v6.3.1.tar.gz", and placed on the DS-106, but the install program says: "Unfortunately, no useable tar ball has been found."

Why?

I only got this message when it went unnoticed that windows had changed the file extension during download. Apart from that I have no idea.

What is the filesize of the tar ball? It should be 17 MB.

Did you use Internet Explorer to download it? It doesn't like tar balls, sometimes (i.e. unzips it on-the-fly and renames it to .tar.tar or .tar).

Try to download it again from here: http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads..._v6.3.1.tar.gz

Consider using a decent browser, Firefox for example, to download and install. For the latter it is highly recommended to NOT use IE since it won't let you see what's going on. You'll miss a great part of the fun installing SS on SSODS! :-)

That was exactly the problem... Sorry...

My Windows XP did not show the complete file name, so when i renamed the file, its was all wrong. Now SS is installed, and I am ready to test it tonight. I am currently transferring my 70 GB's og music from my USB1 external HD. D*mn its slow... :-)

You're welcome. That's another "problem" with windows, it, by default, doesn't show the file extension. You could turn on the display of full filenames (incl. extensions) in explorer. It's in the menu "extras" (in German windows, maybe it's "tools" in English), "Folder Options" and there uncheck "hide file extensions of known files" (or so).

Anyway, now it works.. prepare for a long file scanning session :-)

that's why i use the firefox to download the firmware.... IE will convert it to file extension of .tar

I am waiting for the new IE7 to be released in my language. If thats not good enough, then I will convert to FireFox.

How does it work? Do I simply uninstall IE and then install FireFox? Everything is the same afterwards?

You can just install firefox as well as iexplorer. Windows does not care that you have a second browser (well at the moment at least). I use both no problems; dont bother to uninstall iexplore - it will kill windows.

it's up to you. no impact unless using some spaces...

I have to say, that this setup is simply fantastic! SSODS RULES :-) My girlfriend is very very very pleased with this electronics-gadget-investment :-)

Is it possible to shut down the DS-106 with the SB remote?

I use it to shut power down my Linux server from the SB3 remote.I use this command in a script: "sudo halt -p".

and added an entry in sudoers:

"slimserver ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL"

The possibilities are endless, I also use execute to restart slimserver and mount disk drives.
