Tom,
Appologize for the technical ignorance. You said the
following but I have a hard time understanding where
on the NetGear configuration web interface to do this.
I understand setting up the port forwarding but not
"assigning a static IP to the machine running the
Slimserver software"

"First off, you need to properly set up your port
forwarding within your
router. To do this you need to assign a static IP
address to the machine
that is running the SlimServer software. This is done
through the Netgear
configuratin web interface (192.168.0.1). In my case
I set it so that it
always assigns 192.168.0.99 to my SlimServer machine.
This is an arbitrary
number, I picked 99 so I could remember it."

Can someone let me know how this works.

Dan

Dan,

I guess your didn't get the mail I sent you directly this morning, here it
is again:

I apologize for complimenting your manual. I actually read the sections I
told you about, and although it mentions that you need to set up a static
address for port forwarding, it never explains how to do that. I have
looked through the rest of the manual and can't find the exact procedure
for
you. I use some noname router that allows it through the web interface, and
I
just assumed a name brand would have the same if not more features.

However, I have worked out a work around for you that shouldn't be to bad
if
you have gotten this far. Here are the steps to manually setting up a
static
IP address in XP.

1) Get you current IP and DNS info. Go to the run command on the start
menu. Type CMD. This will bring up a DOS window. Type ipconfig /all . This
will bring up the current info that was assigned to the computer by the
DHCP
in the router. Write down the Gateway (should be 192.168.0.1), the Subnet
Mask (probably 255.255.255.0), and DNS Servers (unique to your ISP).

2) To set up the IP address manually, go to the Control Panel on the Start
Menu. Select "Network and Internet Settings". Then Select "Network
Settings". Right Click on "Local Area Network" and select "Properties".
Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and then press the "Properties" button.
Select "Use the following IP address" and enter the following"

IP address: 192.168.0.99 (if you would like you can
use another)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 (if this is what you wrote
down in step 1)
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1 (if this is what you wrote
down in step 1)

Preferred DNS server: Enter the first one you wrote down in step 1
Alternate DNS server: Enter the second one you wrote down in step 1

If you had more then two DNS servers, don't worry you only need to enter
two.

3) Restart the machine.

At this point the machine has the static IP address you just assigned. You
can verify this by running ipconfig /all like you did in step 1. You can
now go into http://192.168.0.1 and set up the forwarding of port 9000 to
the
static IP address. This is outlined in Section 6-1 of you manual.

Hope that wasn't to much info all at once. Remember if it doesn't work for
you all you have to do is go back to the TCP/IP properties and set it back
to obtain address automatically and then restart.

If you have any questions, please ask.

Tom

What that means is: If your computer (the one you're running the
SlimServer on) gets its IP address by DHCP from your router, you need to
change that. Assign a permanent IP address to that machine (that's what
we mean by a "static IP"). You make this adjustment on the computer
itself. You don't need to turn off the DHCP server on the router, but
you should pick an address that's not in the DHCP assignment pool.
Example: if DHCP assigns you 192.168.0.100, use 192.168.0.95.
