Users of AlienBBC and listeners in general to BBC streams may be pleased to know that the Beeb is supporting WMV format on all its radio streams. Previously, only a couple of stations were availble in WMA format.

Where did you get this info ?
There have been WMA streams for all radio channels for a few months now but only in the UK - will this change ?

The Inquirer posted an article today regarding the BBC and MS striking new techology deals.

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=35282

Article also mentions the Beebs move over to supporting WMA - which is welcome news :-)

"According to a press release from Sonos, the blokes over at the Beeb have decided to jump ship for relying on Realplayer for web content, and have switched over entirely to the Windows-friendly WMA format. Now that the BBC has made The Big Switch, BBC radio stations will be received automatically for users of wireless music and radio provider Sonos."

Anyone know why they didn't use MP3?
It annoys me that they have gone from the horrible Real company and format
to the pretty horrible Microsoft format.

It looks like a rehash of the Guardian article of sept 28th
http://media.guardian.co.uk/site/story/0,,1883159,00.html
http://business.guardian.co.uk/story/0,,1883252,00.html

I think more may have been read into it about radio - I think the MS deal is more to do with MS new IPTV platform.

Would this then open up the possibility of integrating AlienBBC with Squeezenetwork to allow BBC listen again with transcoding on the PC?

BTW, this http://forums.sonos.com/showthread.php?t=5034&highlight=BBC thread on the Sonos forums metions the new WMA URL's as they don't seem to be visible on the Beeb's web-site.

Opening their radio player page still results in .ra streams

The Sonos guy took the URLS from a post on a Roku forum and AFAICT Sonos had nothing to do with it. I posted an extract of the station list from the Roku forum post a week before the Sonos entry. (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=144204&postcount=18)

I think Andyg may put the URLS in a Slim picks - in the meantime they are already in WikiRadio.

I think these WMA stream are trials as they are very very slow to start up. If you have a problem connecting drop the "_hi" and see if it improves.
