View Full Version : QUICK HELP PLEASE - Slimserver not playing AAC M4a files

I spent the week getting songs and creating playlists for a party tonight and now have an urgent music problem! Help? Advice? Thanks!

I have a fairly small library of about 2400 songs, the majority of which are converted to M4a files. Everything was playing fine all week, and then on Friday two things happened:

(1) my wife upgraded to iTunes7 and,
(2) I upgarded Slimserver to 6.5.1 - 10426 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252

Now, it appears that none of my M4a files are playing. Can't guarantee all are not, but everyone tried thus far is not playing. All other file types play fine. I've downloaded the latest LAME and Player/Audio settings say its working. I've checked and have the latest Quicktime versions. Not sure where to go from here, but I'm losing time. I guess I can always run the party playlists from my iPOD and DLO dock.

EDIT: Forum searched and seems this is a common problem?!?! Perhaps something to do with iTunes 7 and it's new album cover finder. Not sure, but haven't found an answer in the forums yet.

I don't know much about iTunes, but what does the slimserver logfile say?

Thanks - this is d_source trying to play an M4a song. Wasn't sure how much of the log to copy.

This is the problem section. Unfortunately, both cases of this type of
failure that were reported in the bug tracker are marked as fixed with
the latest
version of 6.5.1 builds. Only thing I can think to do is try a full
clear and rescan to make sure you get clean updated info about all of
the tracks.

sorry that I can't offer much more. Apple has never been one to give
anyone heads up on any changes, nor do they have any problem breaking
any standards when they feel fit. It is always risky upgrading iTunes
if you depend on it's interoperability with other applications.

This looks like it could be the Windows security s/w (AntiVirus, Firewall, anti-spyware, IM-protection etc.) blocking the socketwrapper.exe application.

What security s/w have you installed ?
Can you enable slim.exe and socketwrapper.exe to be trusted by your security s/w.

kdf - i'll try a full rescan. EDIT: Full clear and rescan did not work.

bpa - mcaffee security center. i'll look into adding trusted apps. EDIT: Both were set to full access

Thanks!!

Ending up using iPOD and DLO dock, so at least the party worked.

I'll try the latest nightly and then call Support on Monday I guess. Frustrating not to be able to access 80% of my library on my 4 SBs (1 SB1, 2 SB2, and 1 SB3).

OK, played around more with this tonight:

1) Reconfirmed that the m4a files do not play.

2) Did a SS uninstall and deleted the program directory. Installed today's SlimServer Version: 6.5.0 - 9916 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252. The m4a files play.

3) Then did another SS uninstall and deleted the program directory. Installed today's SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 10449 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252. The m4a files will again not play.

I'm obviously going to revert back to 6.5.0. Clearly seems to be isolated to a problem with 6.5.1.

I didnt have much luck with 6.5.1 with mp3 or AACs see http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28478&highlight=ajmitchell

but 6.5.0 seems ok apart from some minor issues.

hope you get it sorted in time!!
