It would require a pretty fast CPU to do on-the-fly conversion from a full
line input source to something like mp3. On-the-fly conversion to .wav is
probably possible with less horsepower.

I am not sure of an application that does this, someone else might now.

Just out of curiosity, where is this desire for the line in coming from?

If the media in question is in fact CDs then the best option is simply to
rip them and stream them out that way.

Not really sure specifically, but I do a lot with audio/music/instruments
and it ocurred to me it might be a useful tool. i just can't think of a
specific use at the moment! It is of course easy to rip and convert to MP3!
