Mail lists *are* different - that's the point. Why are we all using
a mail list instead of formulating massive To/CC lists every time we
want to post an article?

If I received an email with loads of To/CC addresses then perhaps I
would consider using "reply to all". As it is, mail list articles
arrive from a single entity (the mail list) and I only have to reply
to a single address (the mail list) for the article to be automatically
distributed to all subscribers. The fact that there's a mail list
involved is irrelevant - I'm still only replying to a single address.

Of all the justified negative comments levelled at Yahoo, I never saw
one person ask why they had to reply to the list instead of having
to "reply to all" of the list's subscribers. I seem to remember that
the reply procedure worked in much the same way on Yahoo.

I subscribe to a lot of mail lists and haven't seen a single one that
allows "reply" to generate be a private message to the original poster,
thereby forcing the use of "reply to all" as the only method of
guaranteeing that a followup article will get onto the mail list, where
it belongs. Someone said that lists like that do exist, but apart from
"The elm appreciation society" mail list, I can't think of any project
that would find it useful to configure its list server in such a way.

I don't think it's entirely listserver config, it's mail client as well.
For example, if I use mailstart.com in a browser, the reply button sends a
reply (on yahoo certainly) to the originator. In outlook express it sends
it back to the list.

Strange eh?
